Scripture: Psalm 24

Have you ever turned on the TV or opened up your phone first thing in the morning and read the news headlines and immediately wanted to turn around and just go back to bed? Life can be trying sometimes; the world and its complexity and chaos can be frustrating.  We ask ourselves like brother Marvin Gaye “what’s going on?” We question the state of our cities, our nation, our world, and ask who is in charge of all of this mess?

We sing with Marvin Gaye:

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

The psalmist in today’s scripture with lyrical genius reminds us. “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;” or in the King James version “The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

In other words, God’s in control. The psalm this morning was a part of the processional liturgy of the ancient Temple.  It was sung as a reminder that the earth belongs to God. It paints a picture of our creator God who has established the foundations of the earth.  The psalm invites us to take comfort in the knowledge that this is God’s world! The psalmist then exalts God. The psalmist invites us to lift up our heads to see the king of glory. The psalmist asks this refrain: who is the king of glory? The Lord is strong and mighty.

Our heads may be downcast, we may wonder who is in charge of the world? Lift up your head today and look up to God our creator. A young Presbyterian minister named Maltbie Babcock penned the words to this hymn of faith.

This is my Father's world:
O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world:
Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King: let the heavens ring!
God reigns; let earth be glad!
