PASTORS CORNER

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children” (Matthew 19:14). Recently I was speaking at a church whose ministry to children has suffered greatly during the COVID19 pandemic. We at College Park Church have also seen our much-valued Children’s Sabbath School ministry mothballed for months. Our cherished children have experienced the loss of hearing the story of Jesus while sitting at the feet of dedicated and spiritual teachers. Though we collectively commiserate on the loss of Children’s Sabbath School, I would like to stem the tide of program loss and celebrate ministry and a few individuals who are leading out in ministering to our children and young people.

Our children’s ministry leader, Christine Leites, a home-schooling mom of four, has done an excellent job of keeping ministry to our children moving forward. News reached my ears from multiple sources of an excellent children’s zoom meeting that happened last Saturday night in which children and parents had a wonderful, interactive time. Additionally, Christine is preparing a number of our children to lead out in a Children’s Sabbath service on November 21. The service promises to be a blessing to the entire church family. Dawn and Asher Handy have done an outstanding job in transitioning to an online zoom Adventurer program while introducing a magnetic personality, Ace the Adventurer to our children. Their success in Adventurers could not be achieved without the many teachers and parent volunteers that provide the backbone of this ministry. Pathfinder leader Francois Gregorio and assistant leader Cheryl Chant along with a team of Pathfinder volunteers have also transitioned to online zoom meetings with occasional safe weekend small group adventures in the great outdoors. Michelle DeSilva and Daniella Kuchurivski have taught an online tag-team Earliteen Sabbath School Class since March 21. These two ladies have been a true blessing to our young people. I would strongly encourage every parent of children in Grades 6-8 to take advantage of these well-planned and well-taught lessons. Leah-Anne Ekwenuke has endeavoured to make sure no online worship service is complete without a children’s story. Leah-Anne could always use more story-tellers and our communication team members are always willing to film your story if your excuse for not sharing is, “I can’t video myself or I don't know how to use technology."

Finally, I thank God for His protection over our church school, CPES. On September 2, a small band of parents, children and church members gathered at the school parking lot for a specially called prayer meeting service. On that evening, as the sun was going down, young and old placed red tape on every door entrance and frame. The tape was symbolic of the blood that the Israelites’ placed on their doors as they prepared for the Passover. So far, by God’s grace, providence and protection our school has been covered. Our children have been learning in a safe environment.

During these trying times, we are grateful for all who have invested in our children. In addition to being safe, we want our children to be saved. I am blessed and honoured to lead a church that is equipped with a group of volunteers who want children to meet, love, and serve Jesus.
