“Having a Baby While Black in the US: Effects on Maternal Mental Health", a virtual panel discussion on Tuesday, November 10th from 7:00 - 8:00pm.
We will be hosting Dr. Calvin Lambert, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at Montefiore in the Bronx, Dr. Sinmi Bamgbose, a Reproductive Psychiatrist at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, and Gabrielle Horton, the executive producer of the podcast docuseries NATAL, which shares first-person stories of Black birthing parents across the U.S. (https://www.natalstories.com/)
Black mothers in California die from pregnancy and childbirth complications at three times the rate of white women; in New York, it's eight times. Informed by the multidisciplinary perspectives of our panelists, we will discuss how the systemic racism and inequity faced by black mothers in the US and in the healthcare system affects maternal health outcomes, with a focus on mental health and well-being.
This initiative provides funding to science policy groups led by graduate students, medical students, and postdocs. We offer funding for virtual activities that focus on civic engagement and sparking dialogue with public officials, local community leaders, and the public around science and health research.
This year, we have a variety of opportunities for different types of projects, including a data visualization track and startup funding for new science policy groups. The application deadline is November 9th, 2020. More details are available on the initiative’s information page, and questions can be sent to microgrants@researchamerica.org.
