The Uluru Statement from the Heart translated into more than 60 languages 

 
This week is NAIDOC week and  it coincides with the launch of a collaborative project between SBS Radio and Uluru Dialogue, Indigenous Law Centre, UNSW translating The Uluru Statement from the Heart into more than 60 languages (in both digital and audio formats). 

The translations provide a unique opportunity for multicultural communities to connect with First Nations perspectives and understand this historic Statement, which was delivered on 26 May 2017 at the First Nations National Constitutional Convention, near Uluru.

Updated information for multicultural communities – coronavirus (COVID-19)



Queensland Health is working closely with key stakeholders across the state to ensure that people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds have access to current, culturally appropriate and translated COVID-19 information. Queensland Health have provided written translations for
  • Easing of restrictions – November Update
  • Entering Queensland – Border restrictions
They have been published on Queensland Health’s Information for multicultural communities – coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage.

Women’s health collaboration for refugee background clients in Cairns


Breast Screen Queensland, Centacare Multicultural Services and Refugee Health Nursing teamed up to offer women of Refugee background an opportunity to meet for morning tea, women’s health education (including breast health) and participate in breast screening in honour of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness.

Over the past 3 Friday’s, 23 women aged 40 – 74 years participated in screening and 28 in women’s health promotion activities facilitated in Nepali, Swahili and Kinyarwanda via interrupter services and Centacare Bicultural Support Workers.

Guest speakers included Cairns Sexual Health Services with special thanks to Caroline and Natasha.”  
The sessions have been well enjoyed by the women and by all involved!

New Tzu Chi Building in Salisbury


The Tzu Chi Foundation have donated so much to the refugee background communities in Brisbane including dental fairs, volunteering and material relief. They have recently demolished their building in Salisbury and are fundraising to build what they would like  be a space where all communities can come together. They aim for it to be available to host training/mini-conferences and a space to gather (plan pictured LEFT). Please consider donating to this cause here.

Translated/ Easy English Resources for Community

CALD suicide prevention resource in multiple languages


CALD suicide prevention project is a state-wide, two-year project supported by the Queensland Mental Health Commission and led by the Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre.

This project aims to upskill human services workers to recognize and support culturally diverse individuals who are experiencing suicidal ideation or behaviour. The project will also upskill culturally diverse media outlets on how to safely portray suicide in local media in collaboration with Mindframe.

Child Mental Health and Wellbeing During COVID-19 - Translated Resources

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on families and the social and emotional well being of children. Providing information to parents and carers that helps them to support their children’s mental health and well being during this difficult time is especially important.

The National Workforce Centre for Child Mental Health, led by Emerging Minds, have produced a range of resources and translated two resources into 17 languages. See them here:

Movember - translated resources to support men's health


Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.

LUMINOUS in the Neighbourhood


Each year, the LUMINOUS Lantern Parade at Southbank gives a very warm Welcome to new Queenslanders. Of course, because of COVID-19, thousands of us cannot gather together this year to make that happen. Instead, you can say Welcome with our virtual lantern parade at LUMINOUS in the Neighbourhood.

Premiering at 7pm, Saturday 14 November. Featuring established and emerging performers celebrating our cultural diversity and welcoming new Queenslanders to conclude REIMAGINE 2020 virtual events.

Senior Peer Coordinator (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse)


You are invited to apply for an AO5 part-time position available at Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre (QTMHC)  for a Senior Peer Coordinator (CALD) with a lived experience of mental health. The purpose of this role is to promote and give guidance to the development and ongoing management of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD lived/living experience participation and provide ‘systems advocacy’ in relation to consumer related issues especially from a culturally diverse lived/living experience of mental health.

Have your say about improving health access and outcomes for migrants and refugees in Brisbane South


All health professionals – in clinical or non-clinical roles – working in the Brisbane South PHN region are invited to complete this survey.
 
By understanding your knowledge, skills, confidence, experience and perspectives about working with migrants and refugees, the research team can understand the issues that may affect implementation of the Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice Competency Standards Framework to guide culturally responsive practice of health professionals. You do not need to be familiar with the Framework in order to take part in this study.
 
The survey may take around 20 minutes to complete and can be completed in multiple sittings. The survey is open until Friday, 18 December, 2020. Click HERE for the survey.
 
The survey is conducted by Griffith University, Metro South Health and The University of Technology Sydney.

In 2020, the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on promoting the role of nurses in the prevention and management of diabetes.

Anti-viral - COVID safer comics 


The Centre for Culture Ethnicity has developed co-designed resources focusing on young people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The comics focus on eight different health topics related to issues that have impacted young people during the pandemic including sexual health. They are visually engaging and portray the choices and issues that young people may face. Please share these with other organisations and the young people you work with.

Digital inclusion 

National Digital Inclusion Roadmap: Australia is digitising, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating the pace of every-day activities moving online. It is becoming increasingly critical that all Australians are digitally included so they can participate in all aspects of society and have the skills to complete tasks confidently and safely. Advocacy movement to the Australian government to allow NZ to accept refugees from offshore detention centres and in detention around Australia


March update on Game Over - get people to safetyIn the past year, the #GameOver campaign has worked with a coalition of almost 50 organisations that have overseen over 300 people resettled.

But as the Australian Government’s deal to resettle refugees in the United States comes to a close, there are still nearly 500 refugees and asylum seekers remaining offshore and in detention around Australia, and the Government has no plan for them.
