Did you know that 1 in 4 people don't even know their neighbour's name?
On FRIDAY DECEMBER 4TH @ 6pm let's all come together to celebrate a safe, post Covid community that welcomes and supports each other.

How it Works

On Friday December 4th at 6pm, every household is encouraged to head out to their kerb, or a central point in your street for a 'Hello Happy Hour' to meet and greet your neighbours. Fill out the Hello Cards and hand them to those you meet (Please remember to wear your mask and practice safe distancing at all times).

Download the flyer HERE for the Hello Cards and more info.
A fierce public defender of people oppressed by a military government, Oscar Romero the El Salvadorian Roman Catholic Archbishop, just weeks before he was assassinated, pleaded
with his congregation that “Those who have a voice must speak with those who are voiceless”. I believe that we too, members of the Surf Coast Community thankfully living in a democratic country of freedom are being called to be a voice for many voiceless asylum seekers and refugees. Regardless of which Federal Government was/is in power, our Australian treatment of refugees in the past 7 years has been harsh, lacking justice, compassion and contrary to the good old Aussie motto of ‘A Fair Go for Battlers’.

Many refugees faced a dangerous and frightening journey by boat to flee harsh oppression and to seek security and freedom as is their right according to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Instead of freedom and a welcome they were ‘imprisoned’ in Nauru and Manus Island. Gradually many developed serious physical and/or mental health conditions and have been evacuated to mainland Australia. They have been placed in community detention.

Unfortunately, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has now revoked the community detention orders replacing them, on very short notice of only several weeks, with final departure bridging visas. That means the refugees can now find work, but it is only for six months. They will receive no income or accommodation support. Refugees refused permission to work in recent years are suddenly forced into the work market with no chance of developing a CV at a time of severely increasing unemployment.  These final departure bridging visas are temporary only allowing refugees to reside in Australia until arrangements can be made for their forced departure. In other words, Mr. Dutton on our behalf tells them we Australians have no compassion or justice for the voiceless refugees pleading for the Aussie ‘A Fair Go’.

Torquay and Jan Juc Springboard readers feeling disturbed by our Government’s harsh treatment of refugees may wish to respond to Oscar Romero’s plea that “Those who have a voice must speak with those who are voiceless”. A phone call to Peter Dutton, Scott Morrison and our local Federal MP could be a start.

Make your pet a star in our online pet show – and raise funds to End Trachoma

Did you know Australia is the world’s only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices?  Trachoma is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness. The World Health Organisation has a global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020 and the Rotary Club of Torquay is raising funds to help achieve this.
What is Pets on Parade?
Pets on Parade is an online pet show which will run for the month of November.  Just send us an image of your pet and donate at least $5 to enter.  We have categories of the dogs (funniest and golden oldie), cats (funniest and action cat), best non-traditional pet and best friends.

There are some great prizes to be won including a free consultation with Mobile Vet Geelong valued at $95 and gift vouchers from Torquay Toys.

Here is the
link to the Rotary Club’s web page where you will find the entry details and see your pet starring and the link to make a donation.

How will your donation support the End Trachoma project?
Our goal is to raise enough funds to put together 100 Toiletry Kits for children in the N.T. which will help to stop trachoma from spreading between children.  A toiletry kit consists of a face washer, hand towel, soap, soap container, toothbrush, toothpaste, toothpaste container, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, plastic drink container and a carry bag.

These kits will be distributed to children in and around Alice Springs and will assist in improving their hygiene.

Members of the Surf Coast Community are always welcome to join in the Torquay Rotary Club virtual meetings held via ZOOM 7pm Monday night to hear some good speakers and have some fun getting to know your local Rotarians. For more go to https://torquayrotary.org.au/

Farmer's Market Lions Cake Sales
This week, for the first time, the Torquay Farmers' Market welcomed the Torquay Lions Club selling Lions Cakes and tickets for the Lions' November Duck Race. On the Saturday morning, the Lions sold 14 Christmas cakes and 26 tickets in the Beached Ducks Race.

Here, customer Philip Thomas, chats about the cakes with Lions Theo
Reyntjes (left) and Bill Ferguson before ordering 40 cakes for distribution to his clients and staff for Christmas. He bought two ducks for the Lions Duck Race as well.
We Will Never Forget Them – Torquay RSL
‘We will remember them’ is more than just a slogan for Torquay RSL members, according to President Bob Tyler.

“Those words are locked into the minds of every ex-service person, man and woman, he said. “ ‘Lest We Forget’ and ‘We Will Remember Them’ are the two most important sayings for any RSL member or veteran.
“This year, because we cannot have a full commemoration ceremony at Point Danger on Remembrance Day, we are trying to ensure our community pauses to think of those who have lost their lives for Australia, who have served in any capacity, and those who continue to serve,” Mr Tyler declared.

“In August, we celebrated the end of World War Two by interviewing and photographing living Torquay RSL veterans who served in that war.
“Since then, one has died but to us she is still very much a part of our membership. “From Monday 26 October until after Remembrance Day, banners featuring each of those veterans’ images will be elevated on power poles in Gilbert Street, and their photographs will be displayed in a number of vacant shops, courtesy of Hayden Real Estate,” Mr. Tyler outlined.

Remembrance Day commemorations usually finish at the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the year, but this year because of COVID restrictions, Torquay RSL has arranged for a simple commemoration to be live-streamed from 10.45 am on Wednesday 11 November.

“We must never forget those who, since Federation, have served in Australia’s defence forces and who have given so much of themselves to ensure we have a quality of life far better than they had.

“But equally, we must never forget the sacrifices of mothers, wives, brothers and sisters of those who left them at home to endure loss, hardship and loneliness, ever wondering if their son or daughter would return home.” Mr Tyler concluded.

Torquay RSL’s Poppy Appeal usually run at this time has been severely restricted because of the COVID pandemic. Fitting in with restrictions, RSL committee member Maurie Dale, equipped with sanitiser, gloves, mask and tongs managed some sales at the Torquay Farmer’s Market last Saturday

Term four continues with thirteen classes or activities being delivered online or by zoom. One recent highlight was the Gala Trivia Event (Partially an Enigma) on Thursday 22 October. Our usual Quiz-Master Tim Robinson was host of a special Gala Trivia event, sponsored by Be Connected, a Federal Government program aimed at getting all Australians online, and as part of the Nation-wide Seniors Week program and this is his report:

“Goodie bags of yummy snacks and drinks were delivered by hand to all participants prior to the event starting and these were purchased from local Torquay business as a sign of support. 28 participants took to answering 30 questions posed by me.

The first question asked the name of the coding machine used by the German military during World War Two; the Enigma, and this was a beautiful segue into further questions about computer passwords and security, and further questions about computers using information sourced directly from the Be Connected website.  This was followed by further questions on topics as varied as music, sport and geography.

The first prize [free U3A Surf Coast membership for 2021] was won by Bernie and Peter Little.  Further door prizes were won by Toni and Kevin McCormack, Fiona and John Coyne and Kate McGregor.

This was a fun event that was a little different, [some would say “a bit of an enigma”] allowing for some laughs and fun along the way. Many thanks to Tim, Toni, Sue, Marg and Jennie for all the work putting this event together.” -Tim Robinson
