Let's change the world for good. Together, we can save lives of asylum seekers who have been hurt by restrictive asylum regulations. We can free people in ICE detention centers, who are at risk of contracting COVID-19. We can use international human rights standards to build accountability for police violence and dismantle systemic racism. We can strengthen human rights protections for women and LGBTQIA+ people. UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW 36

Three times a year, at the United Nations Human Rights Council, a dozen or so countries are in the spotlight for a peer-review process dubbed the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). This video gives an overview of the process and how civil society organizations can get involved. The global COVID-19 pandemic has made the process remote, but at long last the 36th UPR session originally scheduled for May is happening right now.

The countries called to the stage for this 36th UPR session include Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Honduras, Jamaica, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, the Maldives, and the United States—all countries of interest for The Advocates and its clients and partners. For more than a year, we’ve been busy researching and submitting reports, conducting advocacy with Human Rights Council delegates, and holding virtual events to raise awareness about our issues and ensure that they get attention when those countries' human rights records are reviewed.

Following the interactive dialogues, The Advocates has also been holding live debriefing discussions of the UPR on our Facebook page. These live discussions include an overview of our issues in key countries, clips of specific country interventions, and commentary from partners, volunteers, and staff. Watch archived versions of these debriefing discussions here:

Keep an eye on our social media pages for live debriefing discussions on issues ranging from the death penalty to immigration following the UPR of the United States, Libya, Jamaica, Bulgaria, and Croatia.
Seeking a comprehensive look at our work in 2020? Find reflections on the threats to human rights and the hope we find in the fight for dignity, peace, justice and equality in our recently published newsletter, the Human Rights Observer.
As the world kicks-off “16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence” in November, we reflect on the marked differences - and impacts - 2020 has imposed in the past year. COVID-19 has acutely changed our lives and the way we do things. But ending violence against women cannot be put on hold. As we navigate through these altered times, we continue to carry on our work to identify the barriers to women's safety and solutions to promote women's safety. Stay connected with The Advocates' social media through the 16 Days, from November 25 to December 10, to hear updates on women's rights and the work we are doing to make the world better and safer for women and girls.
