RSN News: Leaders Graduate and Permission Granted 🎉

RSN News
1. Leadership Course Graduation
2. Planning permission: granted
3. Higher Education update and job opportunity
4. Through the sun and the rain

9 inspirational young leaders completed RSN's leadership course this month. The course took place entirely virtually - which allowed young people from Cambridge, Peterborough, Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas to take part where they otherwise might have struggled. Here's our course coordinator Carolyn sending off the graduation certificates before the Zoom celebration dinner.
The group this time around were fantastic - determined, intelligent and thoughtful. Here's a photo of us posing for the camera before discussing models of leadership and the values which drive us to make change, in ourselves and in the world. A huge congratulations to all! If you or someone you know are interested in completing the course, the next one begins in Februrary and we're accepting referrals now

Access to Higher Education

It's been really busy in the Higher and Further Education world. As students approach the UCAS deadline, our advice line has been considerably busier than normal. Not only is it an important time of year for young people, but we're receiving 20% more inquiries this year than last. This is one of the reasons we're recruiting for a specialist in FE, who can advise young people and run training for professionals. If you're interested in joining our team, or know someone who would be perfect, please forward them this email or encourage them to apply through Charity Jobs. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 11th November.

Our HE team was also really pleased to join Springboard Youth Academy for their half-term programme at Newman Catholic College. It was enriching, engaging and fun to work through possible educational pathways for young people who have recently arrived in the UK. We spoke about the barriers they may face during their studies, and how best to overcome them. If you're a practitioner looking to help young people in this way, we're running a training for you on Thursday 21st January 2021. Sign up by clicking here.
Did you know?
Tesfalem Yemane, who is the current holder of the Marks Scolarship which RSN coordinates, is facilitating a seminar series on 'Decolonising Forced Migration: Political (Un)-Intelligibility, Reflexivity, & ‘Epistemological Agency’. The series aims to promote critical thinking on questions regarding the production and circulation of knowledge on forced migration, which is often dominated by researchers in the Global North. If you'd like to support Tesfalem and learn more from researchers with lived experience, book the free seminar on Thursday 24th November by clicking here
🚨 📢 Good news! RSN has been granted planning permission to transform the old bank in Harlesden into a refugee education centre and head office. Click here to read the full update, or check out this virtual tour courtesy of Jess and Moses.
We'd like to give a massive shout out to two RSN heroes. Firstly, Anne Norman, for completing a mammoth 115 mile walk of the Cleveland Way in the North York Moors National Park. Anne had storm Alex to contend with and walked for a number of days in the cold and heavy rain, all to raise money for the amazing young refugees we work with who are determined to develop, learn and go to university or college.
Similarly, to Ben Dean, who is part of the team working on the building project and who ran a Marathon around the Arboretum Lake in Walsall. Everyone at RSN, including staff, mentors and young people, are incredibly grateful to you for going the extra mile (sorry) and for supporting us in this way. If you are interested in fundraising for RSN at this crucial time, just get in touch by replying to this email.
