Loreto Highlights Update - 6th November 2020
His Excellency The Governor of Gibraltar

On Thursday 5th November, His Excellency, The Governor, Vice Admiral Sir David Steel KBE, visited Loreto Convent School.

The Governor was met at the main entrance by Mrs Napoli – Head teacher, who welcomed Vice Admiral  Steel to the school.  This was a low key visit due to all the Covid safety measures that are in place.

Arriving in the old part of the school, His Excellency was keen to hear about the history of the beautiful building as he passed through the cloister adjacent to the Palm Tree Playground and our black and white corridor where he looked inwards to a Science lesson being taught by Mrs Garner.   Making their way up to the school chapel, Lieutenant General Steel commented on how remarkable and wonderful the chapel is for the pupils.
Stopping off, and socially distanced in the computer suite, Mr Devincenzi-Clemens talked about the digital curriculum, school development in coding and robotics, and the work to obtain a sponsor for a purpose-built Maker Space for the children to encounter engineering and robotics, using 3D printers as part of the design and manufacturing process.  His Excellency was impressed with the design and manufacturing lesson being taught to year 6 pupils, especially how the 3D printer worked.  He commented on how these would radicalise the 'Stores' departments onboard Navy vessels where space is at a premium.  He was even able to offer a 3D design competition for the Year 6 pupils, we'll wait to see what the prize will be!?

The Governor then visited other areas of the school as he toured the building with Mrs Napoli, visiting a year 6 class where the children recited a wonderful poem.  The next port of call was the playground where Ms Sciacaluga and Mrs Simpson's Music class performed body percussion to His Excellency, which he was amazed with the pupils keeping timing and rhythm to portray the song.   Year 4 then gave a sneak preview of our Christmas dance performance which has been choregraphed by Mr McGibney.

A brief, albeit snap shot of the school, His Excellency then signed the visitor’s book as he departed from the school.
We thank His Excellency for coming up to the school and we look forward to speaking to him again when he announces his competition winner!
