Celebrate Tree Week this month with a
free tree to plant in your garden

This year we're celebrating Tree Week (28 November to 6 December) by offering all east Oxford residents a free native sapling to plant in their garden. There's more details in the rest of this email, but if you'd like to claim your sapling just drop us an email below.

This month at Low Carbon East Oxford

This month we're offering east Oxford residents a native sapling to plant in their gardens - absorbing carbon emissions and providing food for local wildlife!

The saplings have either been grown locally or given to us by the Woodland Trust charity, and there's a choice of:
elder, hazel, holly, rowan, crab apple, juniper, hawthorn or sloe. If you aren't sure which would be the best choice for you just tell us a little about your garden and we'll be able to help advise you.

As well as getting a free tree to plant, we're also looking for local residents who can support our tree planting efforts by:
  • putting up a poster about the free trees in your window or a local community building
  • sending us photos of your tree being planted - we'd love to make a collage to show our community coming together even during lockdown!
  • getting involved in our active LCEO trees group to help us continue to increase tree cover in our local area of east Oxford.
To claim your free tree or get involved, please get in touch using the email below.

East Oxford Farmers Market will remain open on Saturdays during lockdown

The East Oxford Farmers Market at East Oxford Primary School will remain open every Saturday during lockdown as an essential service.

It's a great way to support local, independent businesses, as well as to get your zero waste fix from the SESI refill stall.

What else is happening in Oxford?

Beyond our own work at Low Carbon East Oxford, here's what's happening in Oxford's low carbon community:

  • Vote to brand Oxford's buses with a climate change message. Oxford Together on Climate Change have submitted a bid to have local buses branded with their seven simple actions to take on climate change. To vote head to the Oxford Bus Company's website and scroll to the bottom to vote.
  • Britain Talks Climate is a new project being launched by Oxford-based Climate Outreach, exploring how to best communicate climate change in a way that draws on shared values instead of causing societal divisions.
  • Webinar: what's the harm in flying? Join this webinar on flying and climate change with Dr Sally Cairns from the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds on 19 November.
  • SESI refill sadly had two of their delivery vans stolen on the night of 3 November from the carpark at Chiltern Business Centre, Garsington Road, in Cowley. Think you might know something? Please get in touch!
  • Low Carbon Oxford North have put together a handy guide to using the Green Homes Grant to retrofit your home.
  • Oxfordshire libraries (including Cowley, Blackbird Leys, and the Westgate locally) have had drop-off points installed for unwanted electrical items which will be repaired and sold on by Bicester Green and Orinico - though we understand most libraries are now closed for the lockdown until early December.

That's it for now!

That's it for this month's newsletter. If you'd like to see something included in next month's newsletter or have an idea for a campaign we could run in east Oxford, send us an email to comms@lceo.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you.

Best wishes,
The Low Carbon east Oxford Team
