Hi there.

Here's a little something for the dark evenings of lockdown that await us.

It's nine minutes of spooky stuff: the audio recording of a ghost story I told to an audience in Sidmouth. And what a story it is... The Axe, the Hook and the Knife ...an old Celtic tale adapted from David Thomson's book The People of the Sea

If you've heard me tell ghost stories before, don't worry, this isn't one of the really scary ones. It's only moderately unsettling. But it's delicious. I hope you enjoy it.

This recording is audio, not video. The screen is mostly black. But I've added a few images, including some that flash.

It was recorded during a show called Living By The Sea, performed with Paul Sartin, the band Faustus and a choir of festivalgoers. And here it is:

Other news

Not a lot to report, I'm afraid. Like most performers, I've had a lean year. I'd love to say I've made creative use of this downtime, but - well - I've spent most of the summer and autumn by the sea, swimming, fishing and foraging. This has involved cooking a lot of seafood paellas...

It's also inspired another unsettling video...

The sea-like summer was punctuated by several days of very hard work, presenting Sidmouth Festival online in early August. My first ever live TV ...  two four-hour shows ... what a christening. Fortunately, there was a great crew and the fantastic Kitty Macfarlane co-presenting, so it went well.

And it's been fun performing occasionally with Colchester's Warm and Toasty Club Online. For their September show I sang a medley at 35'40", talked about Trebor Sweets at 57'10" and crucified some Tom Jones at 1'13'10"

That's it for now. Stay well. Stay safe.
Best wishes, Matthew

PS As if you haven't suffered enough, I might try and create a few more Lockdown Larks in coming weeks.
