The Golden Age of Flamenco
When did flamenco become well known outside of Spain?
While flamenco (Spanish Dance) was a staple form of entertainment in Southern Spain, it wasn’t until the 1800’s that flamenco was shared with the rest of the world and recognized as a unique art form.
The “Golden Age” of Flamenco occurred between 1850 - 1910. Until then this form of entertainment existed only within the local communities in Andalusia (South of Spain). As wealthy people began to travel within Europe and abroad, they were enchanted by this art form. It was completely different to what the general population saw at home. Spanish merchants in Seville saw the opportunity to benefit from its appeal to foreigners, and so the first “Cafés Cantantes” were created (they were similar to British music halls ). These venues featured flamenco performers and became extremely popular with tourists who spread the word. Below a picutre of a Café Cantante in Seville.
