THE Best Albariño buy on the
market
 The first time I tried Albariño, as in real Spanish Albariño, I had an
epiphany. Sauvignon was often too much of a fruit salad, Pinot Gris
lacked the oomph I craved and I'd sooner spread apricot jam on my toast
than hook into a Viognier. Albariño, as many local winemakers have since
discovered, is so perfectly suited to Australian climate, lifestyle and
character. It wasn't cheap sourcing a wine that had to travel from Rías
Baixas in the North West of Spain but it has always been a safe
recommendation.
And now we present our first ever feature and, without argument for me,
the best Albariño buy on the market. Made from 25yo vines, the fresh yet
full-flavoured Pazo Cilleiro has been the darling of the cafe set but
we're going to make a compelling case to make it your summer white:
Pristine and elegant, the wine shows delicate aromas of white flesh
nectarine, Gala apple and lemon peel on the nose, leading to a finely
textured palate that's focused and linear. It's wonderfully structured
by zesty acidity, finishing persistent and mouth-watering. Tasted: June

The Rías Baixas outpost of Bodegas Muriel. This seems to be a much
better, fresher wine than the 2018. Juicy fresh pineapple and tangerine
with a little chamomile and greenery. Good burst of flavour, intensity
and acid cut, some honey, a tickle of spritz, slight chalkiness, green
herb and citrus burst on a solid finish. Fun fun fun. Tasted: June 2020;

At RRP $23, it already gets a jump on its competitors that ask twice the
price. At our $16.99 it gets the push we need to get it into your
glasses (and mouths). Sadly, there is not a heap that makes it into the
country. First in and all of that, we are already counting the days
until the next consignment lands. Scintillating Spanish white.
