Furry Fact Focus:
Pumpkin Health Benefits

It is fall and pumpkin season! Did you know that pumpkin is healthy year round for all of us, including our pets? While it seems like pumpkin for our pets is a recent trend, pumpkin has offered great benefits that the Native Americans were aware of. Pumpkin has properties that make it an excellent wound healer. It also fights off intestinal parasites naturally.

Pumpkin is easily digestible. It is an excellent source of soluble fiber. Pumpkin is full of vitamins and minerals that boost the immune system. Pumpkin contains potassium and iron, which will aid in keeping your pet from becoming dehydrated during bouts with diarrhea and vomiting. Pumpkin can be used to alleviate both these maladies.

Pumpkin is also a successful weight loss tool. Replace up to ¼ cup of pet’s food with 1 tablespoon of pumpkin. Pumpkin is great when transitioning to a new food. It will help prevent GI disruption.
The recommended daily does is 1 tablespoon per 10 pounds of pet. For pets weighing under 10 pounds, start with 1 teaspoon and gradually increase amount.

Read Rae’s upcoming November blog for a more in-depth look at pumpkin’s benefits.
Now, the most important question: Does Starbucks offer pumpkin latte Pupaccino’s??!!

Pablo's Pick
Grandma Lucy's Pumpkin Pouches

Pablo loves his pumpkin! So do his pack mates, Bunni, Bubba and Ellie. Not only is pumpkin tasty, it is very healthy for our cats and dogs. Read all about it in Rae’s upcoming  November blog. Our Furry Fact Focus this month is also on pumpkin’s benefits. Pablo and his mates get pumpkin at every meal. A little goes a long way. It soothes the GI tract, if your pet tends to have tummy issues. It offers soluble fiber. This is helpful to “bulk up” your pet’s stool and control bouts of diarrhea.

We love the new line of Grandma Lucy’s pumpkin pouches. They offer pouches blended to help with inflammation, digestion, skin and coat and bladder. The ingredients are freeze-dried. Just add moisture and serve (we use goat’s milk, of course).

In addition to pumpkin the pouches contain whole foods. The inflammation pouch also contains ginger, turmeric, kale and blueberries. The Skin and coat pouch contains coconut, flaxseed and sunflower seeds. The bladder pouch contains kale, cranberry and broccoli. And the Digestive pouch contains beets, kale, apple and ginger.

Consider trying some pumpkin in your pet’s diet today!

Halloween Pet Tips

We humans sure do love Halloween! Our pets, though, don’t quite “get it”! As we prepare for Halloween and Trick-or-Treating, here are some tips for keeping your pets healthy and safe.

Be sure to keep treats and candy away from your pets. Sugar and fat can cause your pet GI distress, as well as pancreatitis. Be sure to keep chocolate far from your pets. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine. Both are very toxic to our pets.

Keep decorations and electric wires out of reach. Make sure your pet does not have access to open flames and decorations they may choke on.

Keep your pets away from cornstalks and pumpkins. While pumpkins can be healthy, rotting or moldy corn and pumpkin can be dangerous to our furry friends.

Even though we enjoy dressing up in costumes, our pets may have a different opinion on that! Only dress your pet in a costume if they are comfortable in it. Do not force them into it, causing undue stress.

Our pets do not understand what our costumes and scary masks mean. Be sure not to scare them when you are dressed up.

Keep your pets inside and secure in another room, during Trick-or-Treating. Also be sure they are wearing their ID tags in case they do escape. ALWAYS keep cats inside during Halloween. Especially black cats.

Heartfelt Good-byes

Our pets are important members of our family. That is why it is so hard to say goodbye. We would like to take a moment to remember our beautiful friends we lost. Our sincere condolences go out to their families- both two-legged and four-legged. Even though we may not see them, they are always right beside us and forever in our hearts and memories. May they all run free over the Rainbow Bridge.

Our most sincere condolences go out to the family of Gus C.

Gus was a sweet, 13 year old Sheltie. He and his Sheltie brother, Buddy, have been part of the All Pet family for a long time. Maureen even used to babysit Buddy and Gus' human siblings!

Gus loved to play with his brother and enjoyed his yard, watching the squirrels and birds.

His favorite toy was his stuffed flea.

We will miss seeing Gus. But we know he is running free and chasing those squirrels with all of our beloved pets at the Rainbow Bridge.
