Dance of Dualities

If art is the visual entrance into the mystery of creation, then for me, the mandala form has become the ultimate portal. The word Mandala is derived from the root, “manda ,” which means essence. Its' circular form symbolizes the cyclical nature of life and time, orbiting a centre, as the earth orbits the sun, but with a different perspective with each evolution/revolution.  Due to its rhythmic nature, mandala creating and contemplating can be a deeply grounding and meditative experience, The creator and the viewer can take the deep journey to the centre of both the mandala and of one's self.

For me a practical attraction to the small mandala circle form was prompted by a serious health crisis.  I was challenged 12 years ago to find a radical alternative to my large multi media pieces and installations. I found my self on an unexpected spiritual and artistic journey which lifted me into renewed health, renewed trust in my intuition,  and awe at the patterns underlying all things.

Prior to this series of works, I’d taken deep dive into Sacred Geometry, starting with the feminine circle and spiral we see everywhere in nature: in the single cell; in flowers and planets; ferns and galaxies.and eventually I discovered the Flower of Life …the ancient pattern of circles from which every geometric shape and  platonic solid arises.

Leonardo da Vinci, along with  many artists and philosophers once  studied the Flower of Life, and from it they drew out the masculine mathematical properties such as the 5 main geometric shapes, the platonic solids, the torus, and the golden ratio of phi. It was with this rich tool chest of ancient knowledge and geometric symbols and shapes, along with my own intuition, that I created these free form mandalas where the masculine and feminine shapes enter a “dance of duality.”  Watercolour with its ability to flow organically & merge complementary colours became the perfect medium.

I began with the works like “Heart of Gaia” and “Centred”, where lines swirl in spirals from a  soft pulsing centre to the crystalline mountains and trees at the rim. Wanting to create more contrast, balance and grounding, I began interweaving more masculine shapes, such as the inverted triangle or star as in the pieces  “Bird Song” and “Spring Unravelling.” In “Stanza from The Flower” the nautilus spiral is born from within the 6 pointed star while The Flower of Life pattern shimmers from behind. In “Night Flight” and “Crop Circles”  a more cosmic dance of opposites is inspired by the mysterious sacred geometry of crop circles found all over the world.

When I look back, I recognize my artistic process was greatly nurtured and supported by my University Art Teacher and mentor, Bob Steele. He  drew from Jung ’s understanding of the preconscious mind and encouraged in his students personal authentic imagery. D. Melchizedek and others  took me on a journey  into Sacred  Geometry , the “Flower of Life “and  its long 1000 year history as a creation pattern …shrouded in secrecy until recently . Then there was artist and author Judith Cornell with her book “Mandala: Luminous Symbols For Healing”, who inspired me to discover the connection between the spiritual art of the mandala, quantum physics, kundalini yoga and transpersonal psychology. These individuals have enabled me to deeply connect with spirit and ancient knowledge and to bring it to life . Thank you for enriching my spiritual journey and  my art.

Like many of us, I long for harmony in a frenzied and divided world, where separation and the degradation of the earth and its inhabitants stare us in the face. Working on my Mandala forms where complementary colours dance and ovelapp,  feminine and masculine forms interconnect,  and  archetypal forms emerge , a sense of joy, magic and inner peace flowered within me and inspired hope that we can find our way back home. I hope these works bring light and inspire hope and harmony in you as well

Myra's show goes til Nov 23 2020

WANDER: Toward a Lightness of Being (2019)

WANDER-card-WEB 2.jpg
is a public art project by LAIWAN, created in collaboration with UBC’s Department of Earth, Ocean and At
649 22nd St, New Westminster, BC.22nd Street Skytrain Station Bus Exchange. The art project is located at the City of New Westminster, Metro Vancouver's transportation network, and the TransLink and commissioned by mospheric Sciences (EOAS)

WANDER encourages playful discovery of and advocacy for the lives of phytoplankton, making visible the water critters inhabiting the Fraser River, collected for this project from nearby the 22nd Street Bus Exchange site. The artwork aims to encourage curiosity among commuters and the general public about the natural and built environment surrounding this site.
The project simulates a ‘hidden object activity’ where commuters and audiences have opportunity to locate the twenty-two icons and a number of haikus on site. Some designs may not be immediately obvious, but all can be found in a variety of forms, surfaces or possibilities

Anna Binta Diallo: Wanderings
Curated by Katie Belcher

30 September 2020 to 14 November 2020

In Wanderings, Anna Binta Diallo presents an installation of photographic collages in both two-and three-dimensions. The works consider how folk stories influence the formation of identity. Iterative in nature, the ongoing installation-based project shifts with each presentation, sometimes expanding into the exhibition space through sculpture. Of her work, Diallo writes, “Casting a wide net on our Collective History, I reinterpreted folk stories and reimagined or reused them in my own way to create new mythologies. Using archives, books, found imagery, the Internet, memory, and oral traditions, I created a series of new images that can be continuously re-organized.” Drawing on a wide array of stories and perspectives, Diallo reveals the affinities and tensions that exist between these and the mythologies of her own Franco-Métis and Senegalese ancestry; striving to make work that questions and subverts patriarchal ideals and racism. If photography freezes a moment in time, these collaged images release and recapture this moment, turning photographic fact to expansive folklore. Refusing to privilege any fact over folklore, Diallo makes space for complex and contradictory experiences, upending the linear narrative privileged by colonial histories. Diallo’s images reject a single truth, implicating countless and complex understandings of Self and Other.

Can't wait until next week? An installation of Wanderings is still on view at the Waterfront Canada Line Station as part of Capture Photography Festival 2020. Watch the described video here

Indian Summer Festival: A Contemporary Multi-Arts Festival

We would like to invite you to participate in a very special project commissioned by ISF for our 10th anniversary edition ‘River of Language’.

JAALI – Patterns of Speech is a digital, interactive public art project by Vancouver-based creative duo Mustaali Raj and Minahil Bukhari. JAALI (referring to the intricate filigreed screens typical of Indo-Persian architecture) creates a unique geometric pattern that represents each participant, based on their language usage. The project’s website invites participants to share what language they speak, think and dream in, and where they live. As more and more people interact with the project, it builds a beautiful, intricate map of language around the world. This creative response to the global pandemic brings us together as a tapestry of interwoven patterns and acts as a window to our linguistic hearts.

Art Rental Programme 2021 – Call for Artists
Online Submission Deadline:
Saturday, October 24 at 11:59 PM

North Van Arts invites visual artists to participate in the annual juried intake for our Art Rental Programme. This programme promotes the appreciation of visual arts in our community by making the work of local artists available for display in homes, offices and film and television production sets. Art rental provides individuals and businesses with an affordable and flexible way to enjoy a wide range of original 2-dimensional artworks including paintings, photography and mixed media works.

The Art Rental Programme generates revenue and exposure for individual artists through renting their work to our large and diverse clientele. Rental fees are based on the price of the artwork as set by the artist. Royalties are paid to artists semi-annually (less a 30% administration fee). Clients may also purchase artwork from the collection. The Art Rental Programme provides clients with the unique opportunity to “try out” artwork in their homes and offices that they may later purchase.

Due to COVID-19, there are several changes to this year’s adjudication process for new art rental work. Most notably, submissions by the artists, including a photograph of each artwork, must be made online. Adjudicators will select artworks from the submitted photographs. If their work is selected, artists will be notified by email and time will be scheduled for them to deliver their work to CityScape Community ArtSpace. Only the selected artworks are required to be delivered to the gallery.

Please see the Art Rental Programme 2021 Call for Artists for a detailed description of the new submission requirements.

Because this is a contractually-limited appointment, Temporary entry for citizens of the U.S.A. and Mexico may apply per the provisions of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) or citizens of Chile may apply per the provisions of the Canada Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA). No application will be considered without a completed mandatory Work Status Declaration form which can be found at: http://acadjobs.info.yorku.ca/affirmative-action/work-authorization-form.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is November 9, 2020. Applicants should submit a signed letter of application outlining professional experience, an up‐to‐date curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier which supports excellence and innovation in teaching and provide the names of three referees who can address the candidate’s qualifications and experience in relation to the position. The mandatory Work Status Declaration form and the optional self-identification form should accompany the rest of the application package. Reference letters will only be requested for long-listed candidates. Referees should provide strong letters of reference and be advised to address the candidate’s qualifications and experience in relation to the position.

Complete application packages should to be sent to Rose LeCoche, Search Committee Secretary, at vaah-search@yorku.ca.

Posting End Date: November 9, 2020
