Kit Kat petition delivered in York

Two petitions totalling 300,000 signatures calling on Nestlé to reconsider its move to end Fairtrade certification for Kit Kat were handed in at the beginning of October.

From October 2020, Kit Kats no longer contain Fairtrade cocoa and sugar. Instead, Nestlé is moving to the promotion of its own Cocoa Plan and the Rainforest Alliance certification. As a result 27,000 sugar and cocoa farmers will lose the Fairtrade Premium, to be replaced by funds promised over the next two years and an alternative premium without the same guarantees as Fairtrade.

“As Fairtrade producers, our voice is heard and taken into account. We are treated with the respect and dignity we deserve. Stopping the relationship with Fairtrade is to silence our voices... This is a devastating blow for some of the world's poorest producers, many of whom live on less than a dollar a day.”
- Atse Ossey Francis, President Ivorian Fair Trade Administrative Committee

Joanna Pollard, Coordinator of Fairtrade Yorkshire, says: "We didn’t ultimately get what we wanted from Nestle, and there’s no suggestion they’ll change their minds. So how can we help win a better deal for farmers now? Buy Fairtrade chocolate and keep campaigning for a fairer chocolate industry."
