Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic has overshadowed the fact that the US-China trade war is more than two years old with no end in sight. This presentation explains how a relatively small tariff on Chinese exports to the US (or vice-versa) can disrupt global supply chains (GSCs) by developing the concept of the effective rate of spillover protection (ERSP). In the presence of supply chains, a bilateral tariff magnifies the amount of protection provided to countries that compete with China for the activities undertaken there. More...

Following the successful conclusion of a Policy Hackathon as part of the Initiative on Model Provisions for Trade in Times of Crisis and Pandemic in Regional and other Trade Agreements, a webinar series is organized to discuss and build upon the top contributions received. The webinar series is organized by ARTNeT partner institutions ESCAP, UNCTAD, WTO and SMU in collaboration with FAO and four other United Nations Regional Commissions. More...

In commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations, ESCAP organized the Regional Conversation Series on Building Back Better with the aim to bring together member State representatives and diverse groups of eminent personalities to share their insights and experiences, inspire actions and advocate solutions on how the Asia-Pacific region could build back better post-COVID-19 pandemic through regional cooperation.
There were six regional conversations in this series covering technology and ICT, fiscal and monetary stimuli, climate change and air pollution, supply chains and connectivity, social protection and shaping our future together.

The Sustainable Trade Index measures the capacity of 20 economies – including 19 in Asia, and the United States – to participate in international trade in a manner that supports the long-term domestic and global goals of economic growth, environmental protection, and better social equity. The index aims to stimulate meaningful discussions of the full range of considerations when advancing sustainable trade.

This event took place on 18 October 2020 in a hybrid mode. SUIBE has been organizing these sessions annually with the engagement of speakers from WTO Chairs Programme, WTO secretariat, ARTNeT, and officials and speakers from numerous institutions from China. Along with the expansion of trade activities, trade is increasingly perceived as leaving too many individuals and communities behind, making a strong case for reformulating trade policies and practices to be inclusive. Although the importance of having this high-end goal of making trade inclusive is undeniable, one has to ask what does that mean in a practical sense?
