My Dear Vet
JM Dragon

Ava Lawrence, a research veterinarian is thrown in the deep end when her uncle asks her to cover his country practice while he has a vacation of a lifetime. How could she refuse?

His team shouldn’t be any different than the crew at her parents’ practice, oh, was she so wrong. What she now has to work with is a sassy nurse, an obnoxious receptionist, and an animal whisperer, or so it seems.

The patients, or at least their owners, a whole other story.

Ava finds herself embroiled in taking care of animals in the area and local issues outside her experience, making her question her sanity. Two women show her she is missing one of the most wonderful things in the world—allowing love into her life.

Throw in chickens, cats, dogs, a donkey named Theo, along with various other animals. This turns out to be Ava’s unexpected adventure with far reaching romantic benefits.

Natalie London Author spotlight

They say a first novel is often partly autobiographical. As a child I lived with my grandparents in their large Victorian home in a small town in northern Wisconsin, a home similar to the one in Secret of Stone Creek. Some of the childhood experiences in the story were mine, but the antics of the evil child and the love affair between the two women were products of my active imagination.

In 2008 I submitted a portion of this first novel to the Critique Services of the Writer’s Institute at the University of Wisconsin. My writing coach and I sent our pages back and forth by snail mail. I called my story Algol’s Daughter, a reference to the Demon Star Algol, in the constellation of Perseus. At that time I was very involved in astronomy, taking many photos of the night sky, a solar eclipse, a comet, and other celestial events. The title was meant to refer to the evil child in the story. My coach told me, Ninety percent of your readers won’t get it.” We changed the title to The Secret of Stone Creek.

Over the years, I rewrote and reedited the story, changing the relationship of the two women to lovers, not just good friends. The story was finally published as my third novel, but only with the help and support of Julie and the talented team at Affinity. Beta editors Mel and Nancy, editor CK King, and proof editor Alexis Smith all did a superb job. Nancy wisely shortened the title to Secret of Stone Creek and Irish Dragon Designs did the striking cover. I also wish to thank Katherine B. and our kitty Nan for their support over the years.

I hope you will enjoy the story.

Secret of Stone Creek is on special for the month...only 99¢!
