Phone Sex!

The Aunty Jane hotline was created in 2012 to provide reliable and safe information about sexual and reproductive health through phone counseling. Power in women’s hands means access to quality, reliable, and confidential reproductive health information at their own comfort. On September 28th, the virtual launch of the revamped www.auntyjane.org website went down with our donors, partners, and allies joining in the virtual celebration.

#BongaNaAuntyJane which simply means talk to. Aunty Jane creates a platform where women and girls can have access to reproductive health information. On our new website, there is a chatbox, a connection to WhatsApp, and other functions, giving young women more avenues to ask questions and get accurate information.

The Healthiest Calendar

Since 2010 TICAH has been creating annual teaching calendars for communities and now TICAH’s 2021 calendar is being printed as we speak! These beautiful teaching calendars are full of positive values, amazing local art, information from history, rights we should know about, herbal medicine recipes, questions to spark discussions, and more. Used in homes, organisations, schools, and support groups across Kenya and the world, the TICAH calendar is a beautiful way to connect with Kenya, TICAH, and one another.

Traditional Music on YouTube

TICAH has been supporting traditional musicians and instrument makers since 2015 through its Medicine Wheel program, so we are excited to share this story of the blend of tradition and contemporary creative outlets:

The Talented Royals band was a popular traditional music group in Bungoma, playing their litungu (a 7 or 8 string instrument from the Luhya community) music at social events across western Kenya. The music supported the 37 members of the group (which includes many musicians, singers, and dancers) and their families. When the pandemic arrived in Kenya the Talented Royals band, like so many musicians across the world, struggled to make ends meet. Dependent on social gatherings, the Talented Royals didn’t know how to move forward in the new normal.

Health Journaling to Stay Healthy

How do you keep track of your health?  For the participants of the Healthy Household program, they use health journals to track their health and improve their well-being.  Participants jot down not only when they have illnesses and how they treat these illnesses to get better, but also what they eat from day to day, how much sleep they get, how much water they drink, when they meditate, and play with their children, etc.

Keeping a health journal has helped the participants have a clearer view of their lifestyle choices and how it affects their health.  Using the health journals have also made it more clear to the participants just what they need to change in order to be healthier - for example,  eating more vegetables, planning for their families’ meals, daily hygiene practices, food preparation, and exercise.

Young Women Supporting Each Other

We facilitate reproductive health discussions with young people in and out of schools. Mercy was one of our school club members. She was part of the club popularly known as Fearless Angels. She passed her final examinations and was able to join a university in September 2019. She had barely adjusted to university life when the world was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools were closed and she was forced to stay at home.
