The past two months have been hectic in the Soils For Life office as we pull together a new strategy to align our focus to support Australian farmers in regenerating soils and landscapes. Ahead of World Soil Day tomorrow, we were also happy to attend the first meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of Soil group.

Spotlight on Winona

World Soil Day 

World Soil Day is an international event to celebrate soil health and to recognise the importance of sustainable soil management. This year, the theme of World Soil Day is 'Keep the soil alive, protect biodiversity', raising awareness that the soil is home to 24% of the planet's biodiversity. Learn about the practices land managers can use to protect soil biodiversity.

Parliamentary Friends of Soil


The Parliamentary Friends of Soil group met this week to celebrate World Soil Day and the importance of Australia's soil health. Passionate farmers, scientists and industry leaders were joined by parliamentarians including the co-chairs of the group, Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Michael McCormack MP and the Hon Linda Burney MP. The Parliamentary Friends of Soil group was established this year through collaboration with Soil CRC, Soil Science Australia, Soils For Life and the National Soils Advocate, the Hon Penelope Wensley, who addressed the meeting. The Minister for Agriculture the Hon David Littleproud also spoke.

Dollars and sense: What we look for in our economic report 

To prepare an economic report for a case study, we conduct a detailed analysis of each property to investigate how the business has performed over time.  Using data from Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), we then compare the farm to others in the same industry and climate. Native Grains

 Over the past decades there has been a growing interest in production of native grasses. In collaboration with local Indigenous groups, farmers and researchers, the most extensive study of indigenous grains from paddock-to-plate has just been completed by the University of Sydney.

Soils For Life case study farmer Garry Kadwell recently won the prestigious Producer of the Year award as part of the 2020 Delicious Produce Awards. Judge Matt Moran declared he had never tasted better potatoes! Congratulations also go to Hamlet Pork for taking out the “From the Paddock” category with their regeneratively farmed Berkshire pork.

A new book has been released titled “Rethinking food and agriculture”, exploring some of the key drivers of unsustainability, agricultural degradation and destruction of the environment. The book highlights the many different ways stakeholders have been forging alternative paradigms for agriculture, human nutrition and political economy which are more sustainable and just.
