Dear CMS families,

There is a great deal of work that needs doing in our gardens at the moment and we are thrilled to advise that we are hosting a Working Bee on Saturday 14th November to give all families an opportunity to join in with caring for our garden spaces. The school calendar shows an original date of Saturday 7th but due to the wet weather expected on that weekend we have moved it back by one week. We'll start at 8:30am and hope to be finished by 11am, but you don't need to stay for the whole morning - any time you can spend with us with be much appreciated!

Please let us know if you can attend and I will again be providing all participants with a map of the school grounds with specific areas marked for specific jobs. These jobs will include Weeding, Planting, Spreading Mulch, Trimming shrubs and trees and various other random tasks.

We would also really appreciate donations of any cuttings, bulbs or corms, succulents, seedlings or plants to be planted on the day. Pretty much anything can be used but we are looking for 2 Azaleas or Rhododendrons, two dozen bulbs (Tulips, Daffodils, etc. that will be kept for placement in February), South African Daisies, Geraniums, various succulents for our succulent garden and any flowering native shrubs like Grevillea, Callistemon, or Hardenbergia. We have a number of weeding tools to use on the day but please remember to bring your own gardening gloves and a hat.

This term, the children in Cycles 2 & 3 are doing units on the interrelationship between flowers and the pollinators such as bees, birds, butterflies and other insects and we are hoping to enhance  our gardens to make them even more attractive to these creatures. The Karri children will also be attempting to construct some Bee Hotels for the use of native bees so please let us know if you have any experience in making these as we would really appreciate your tips and advice. We have specific areas of the gardens in mind so once again, please let us know ahead of time what you are able to bring so that we can organise the day. I can be contacted on viv.watson@cms.act.edu.au

I look forward to seeing you all on the day.

Viv Watson
