PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PDST: School Support 
Applications are now open for PDST customised in-school physical education support to all schools.  In order to apply for this free service visit www.pdst.ie/schoolsupport and follow the link to the application form. School support is currently taking place remotely, and is tailored to the needs of the school.  
 
PDST: 120 Non-Contact Activities for Physical Education across the Primary School
This resource has been developed to support the teaching of Physical Education across the primary school. Activities are generic and can be used as warm ups, cool downs and to support learning in any strand. The activities are designed to be non-contact in nature, to ensure social distancing in PE. Click here to access this resource. 

 
(NEW) PDST Resource: Children's Books for Wellbeing 
A new PDST resource Children's Books for Wellbeing is now available to download.  This resource explores how books can be used as a stimulus for movement, creativity and physically expressing emotions in PE and to develop social skills and personal qualities in PE.  Download these resources from the PDST Health and Wellbeing website 
 
 
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

'Active Break Every Day' Challenge (Nov. 9th - Dec, 4th) 
This 4-week challenge is designed to motivate, and to support, teachers and schools to build movement breaks into their daily routine. It is one of the key whole-of-school activities that schools working towards ASF must undertake.

#FeelGoodFridays - Active CLASSROOMS (27/11/20)
Physical activity makes you feel good - FACT!
On the last teaching Friday of each month ASF encourages schools to energise the school day in a FUN and inclusive way. Every month has a different focus. In November, we are asking schools to share their Active CLASSROOM ideas/photos/videos with @activeflag @HealthyIreland to be in with a chance to win prizes for their school.

(NEW) Bizzy Breaks for Bizzy Minds and Bodies - Irish Heart Foundation                                                                    
Bizzy Breaks is a collection of short activities for breaks throughout the school day. The programme is designed with classrooms and current COVID19 guidelines in mind. 
A new addition to the programme is MINDFULNESS, along with wide range of wellbeing activities.  
  • Perfect for use anywhere – indoors, in small classrooms, outdoors. (minimal equipment)
  • All activities adapted for COVID-19.
  • Improves concentration  
  • Transitions and energizers  
  • Each activity lasts 5 to 10 minutes. 
  • All activities are designed to link with class curriculum. 
  • Designed to help busy minds bring stillness and calmness into every day. 
  • Activities and games for the whiteboard. 
  • Ideal for use with the ‘Active Break Every Day’ Challenge.

(NEW) 10@10 Classroom Movement Breaks - Fingal Sports Partnership 
Sports Con 10@10 videos are designed to help teachers keep kids active while staying in their classroom. Each video consists of 10 different exercises. The correct way to perform each exercise is first explained/demonstrated, then a countdown clock brings pupils through 30 seconds of the exercise. This is followed by a 30 seconds rest interval during which time pupils will learn an interesting sports fact. Ideal for use with the ‘Active Break Every Day’ Challenge.  .

The first 10@10 video will be released on Monday, November 9th, with a new release every Monday across the following 5 weeks. Interested schools are asked to

START Campaign - Resources for Parents
Children are becoming overweight earlier and earlier, now about 6% of three year olds are clinically obese. The START campaign aims to support families to take small steps to eating healthier food and becoming more active. It is not about perfect parenting but about achieving one daily win and being proud of our efforts as parents to help our children on the way to a healthier life. Visit START website

 

ACTIVE SCHOOL WEEK

'Active School Week' is scheduled for April 26th - 30th, 2021

If the national dates don't suit, your school is free to organise your #ASW programme at a different time.  

 
'ASF - GETTING STARTED' Training Events (THIS WEEK)
 
The ‘Getting Started’ online training events are designed to support PRIMARY schools working towards ASF during  20/21. Practical advice will be given about how schools can work towards the ASF within the current COVID-safety guidelines. Schools that attend the online training sessions, and have registered that they are working towards ASF this year, will be posted out resources to support their work.  

The training events are tailored for different school types:
 
4/11/20 3.30pm ‘Getting Started’ - Large Schools
4/11/20 7pm ‘Ag Tosú’ - Gaelscoileanna
5/11/20 3.30pm ‘Getting Started’ – Small Schools
9/11/20 3.30pm Renewal Criteria
11/11/20 7pm ‘Getting Started’ – Special Schools
12/11/20 3.30pm ‘Getting Started’ – All School Types
 
WEEK 2: RENEWAL Criteria session
This session will focus on the additional criteria that schools working towards their 2nd and 3rd flags must achieve. 
  • Priority FMS
  • PE Homework
  • Actions to Decrease Sedentary Time
If your school is a renewal school we recommend that you attend one of the week 1 ‘Getting Started’ sessions as well as the RENEWAL criteria session in week 2. Renewal schools that attend both the aforementioned sessions, and also the ‘Nearly There’ sessions (spring term) will, in addition to the renewal flag, receive an outdoor ‘We are an ACTIVE School’, when they complete the ASF process.

WEEK 2: SPECIAL Schools session.
This session is designed to support Special Schools wishing to work towards ASF. Mainstream schools with special classes might also be interested in joining this session.
