The Newsletter
Saints James and Andrew
Greenfield, Massachusetts

Dear People of Saints James and Andrew,

We have several updates we would like to fill you in on as we head into November...

Parishioner Check-In Survey

It is hard to believe we are entering our ninth month of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.  While we know it will end eventually, we do not know when. We know this has not been easy, and the Church Chat Working Group has put together a brief survey to see how our community is coping.  The survey will be open November 5-20.

Please take the Parishioner Check-In Survey

Lament and Live Together

We also would like to encourage folks to consider reading “Lament and Live Together:  A Letter to the Church in New England” which was signed by two dozen church leaders, including Bishop Fisher. The letter invites local churches to reset expectations as the pandemic continues; to rebuke perfectionism and grant one another permission to rest; to make space for lament in our worship and gatherings; to share mental health resources and commit to speaking publicly about mental health.

You can read the letter here.

2020 Ministry Team Reports

As we prepare to begin a new church year this Advent (Nov 29), it seems appropriate that we all give pause to reflect on our ministries this past year. We will plan to have a virtual annual meeting booklet for our Virtual Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 24.  We would like to include a brief summary of how each of SsJA’s ministry teams has adapted in 2020.  We ask that all Ministry Team leaders to please complete their 2020 Ministry report by Friday, November 27.

Worship Experience

We are continuing to work on the quality of the audio experience in worship.  Our first trial (Nov 1) using a new platform went exceptionally well, and the feedback was the audio and visual experience was substantially improved.  We are continuing to also work on the audio experience for when we need to livestream all aspects of the service from the main sanctuary.  This is a more complicated fix, and improvements will likely take us longer.  Due to unique circumstances we will be using the older platform on November 8 and 29th.  We ask for your patience, and know the matter remains a top priority for the Vestry. Please note we have also introduced a new weekly email “Worship This Week” which will provide helpful links and information each Sunday at 9 a.m.

Parish Wide Read: Stamped from the Beginning

As a parish we are striving to engage in the work of racial healing, reconciliation and justice. The Spiritual Life Team has invited the entire parish to engage in our first ever Parish Wide Read of the book Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi over the course of November-January.  Look for details in the newsletter and leaflet on how to participate.

Mini Mistletoe Mart To Go

Lastly, we want to commend the hard work of leaders and volunteers who leaned into a new vision for the Mistletoe Mart amidst the global pandemic.  This will be our primary fundraiser for SsJA mission and outreach in 2020.  This spring when a gap appeared in the community meal schedule, SsJA created Sunday Sandwiches and feeds a growing number of people each week (83 this past week).  The meal costs $2.65 per person and is enough food to last two meals between the soup, sandwiches, granola bars, and so forth.  If you are in a position to support our mission by shopping at the Mistletoe Mart To Go or by sending a special contribution marked ‘mission fundraiser’ please know it is a great help to our ministry. Look for a special email from us with a link to shop on Monday, November 9.

Thank you all for your endurance, faithfulness, and generosity.

Yours,

Rev. Heather & Rev. Molly

  1. Wear a mask while on campus. Once you have arrived in the space where you will be conducting your work, if you are alone, you may remove your mask. If others enter the space or you are traveling throughout the campus, please wear a mask.

  2. Observe social distancing

  3. While on campus, wipes are available everywhere. Please disinfect any surfaces you’ve had contact with

  4. Stay home if you are not feeling well.

  5. If you are aware of having been exposed, please refrain from entering our buildings until two weeks after the exposure.

  6. If you have recently traveled outside of our state, comply with the current state travel restrictions and quarantine for two weeks or wait for a negative COVID test before entering our buildings.

The honor will go to an exemplary servant leader who has found creative ways to model living into our baptismal promises during this pandemic. Please email the nominee's name with a brief explanation of why you are nominating them to Rev. Mission and Ministry

A Friendly Reminder
:  It’s not too late to pledge your support to Saints James and Andrew for 2021.

Thank you.

Thank You! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the people of Sts. James and Andrew for your incredibly speedy and generous response to my appeal for blankets for our neighbors on the margins.  Within a week we went from zero to seven blankets and sleeping bags both through the Amazon wish list and from parishioners storage at home.  On my next walk after my appeal I was asked if I could possibly secure a blanket for one of the men that I visit with often.  As a result of your response I had a blanket in my backpack that I could give him right there.  He told me that the people at Sts. James and Andrew were really appreciated by the homeless folks in the area because of our generosity and recognition of them as something other than the dregs of the earth.  You do good work.

Please don’t take this as a “we are all set now” because the need is just beginning.  The weather continues to cool and jobs continue to be lost as a result of the pandemic.  At the moment there are no plans for an overnight warming center this year so the need for warm blankets will only continue.

Once again, please accept my heartfelt gratitude in the name of our neighbors with needs.

-Steve and Charlie for Emmaus Companions

Yes! You can donate “real” things at SsJA.  There are bins placed inside the parking lot door to  the parish hall – one for plastic grocery bags only (we have plenty of paper ones) and one for donations to Whitney’s Pantry and Sunday Sandwiches.  Whitney’s Pantry again needs bars of soap and toothpaste (regular size, not travel).  Sunday Sandwiches needs individual packs of granola bars, peanut butter crackers, and chips or a bag of Hershey’s kisses.  Donations of sleeping bags, blankets, and tents may be placed next to the bins. (Please note: We ask that any other food donations be brought directly to the Survival Center.) Donations can be brought when our workers are there: 11:00 – 12:30 on Sundays and 3:30 – 5:30 on Mondays.
Thanks from grateful recipients and the Mission Team!

UPDATE: Whitney’s Pantry can use the extra Christmas cards you may have (please make packets of 5, using rubber bands or baggies) – they must be received by November 30.  Extra calendars are also welcome – by December 28.  We have plenty of Bombas socks and will not be requesting socks this Christmas – or any other clothing.  We appreciate your generosity, but things are different this year and we cannot accept everything that we used to welcome.  Remember: NO clothing, and NO food (except the 4 specific items listed for Sunday Sandwiches).

Thanks!

Interfaith Council
A report from Peter Blood at ION (Interfaith Opportunities Network) in Amherst about the impact of the join ION & ICFC virtual event "400 Years: Truth and Healing for the Next Seven Generations":  The program has had over 1200 views so far. Many have written how much it spoke to them! It can still be viewed at: 400 Years: Truth & Healing for the Next Seven Generations .  The program has raised over $6000 so far in donations. All of this will go either to honoraria for Indigenous presenters or (mainly) to the four projects for Native cultural preservation and land restoration.
