Election Day
As the US casts its vote for the the 2020 presidential election, we'd like to highlight our complete set of maps tracing the first 58 presidential elections, dating back to 1789, which tell some fascinating stories.
The first US election, in 1789, was a landslide for war hero George Washington, the only president ever to be unanimously elected. The 1832 election was the first time ever that candidates were chosen by nominating conventions, rather than a congressional caucus or state legislatures. Andrew Jackson won a landslide victory and a second term in office. One hundred years later, the 1932 election was held in the shadow of the 1929 stock market crash and, disillusioned with Republican Herbert C Hoover, voters handed a landslide victory to Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In contrast, the 2000 election between George W Bush and Al Gore was one of the most controversial and closely-run in US history. Florida was the deciding state and after five weeks of disputes and recounts Bush became president.

Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms
Our newly-uploaded set of maps of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms tells the intriguing story of the foundation of the English nation following the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century CE. Repeated raids by Angles and Saxons led to the formation of tribal kingdoms, which in turn were beset by Viking invaders. These kingdoms coalesced under some remarkable kings: Alfred the Great, the most famous, led the defence against marauding Vikings in the 9th century. The Anglo-Saxons embraced Christianity, and in their remote monasteries monks translated the gospels and wrote extraordinary historical chronicles and poetry in the English language. King Æthelstan created the first code of English law in 928.
