November 2020

Welcome, everyone, to our November 2020 newsletter.  In particular, we want to welcome our new cohort of postgraduate students who have joined us this year. We have enjoyed meeting you, and we look forward to hearing about how your research projects develop!  Since the start of the new academic year, we have hosted a series of wonderful and intellectually enriching seminars.   The online platform has meant we can more easily welcome international scholars and participants, and engagment with the seminars from CRPL members and beyond has been fantastic.  We have a great line-up planned for the rest of the semester and into 2021 (see details below).  We look forward to you joining us!  Johanna and Caroline (Interim CRPL Co-Directors)

Extraordinary Professorship Appointment

Adriaan van Klinken has been appointed as Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, where he will be associated wtih the Desmond Tutu Centre for Religion and Social Justice.

Adriaan has a long-standing interest in, and relationship with South Africa, ever since he was a visiting masters student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. He has developed close connections with colleagues at the University of the Western Cape. Two years ago, this culminated in a formal collaboration agreement between the CRPL and the Desmond Tutu Centre. Adriaan’s honorary appointment at UWC provides an exciting opportunity to further develop this collaboration in areas such as research and postgraduate student supervision and exchange.

New Film by Dr Jasjit Singh

In this video, Dr Singh focuses on the main impacts of his research on 'Sikh Radicalism' in shaping policy and practice, re-framing media debates, and empowering Sikh communities and organisations by providing open access resources and facilitating open dialogue community events, fostering greater community cohesion and education. The link to the video is here.

Congratulations to Dr Atack!

CRPL would like to congratulate Ruth Atack on passing her PhD viva with minor corrections! Ruth's thesis has the title 'Education, Religion and National Identity in Israel: The Politicisation of Religious Values in Israel's Formal and Informal Education System'. Ruth was supervised by Nir Arielli (History) and Johanna Stiebert (TRS). Her examiners were Emma Tomalin (TRS) and Stefanie Sinclair (Religious Studies, The Open University). Well done, 'Dr Ruth', and thank you also for all your outreach work in high schools and the wider community, promoting the study of religions.

ABOUT THE Centre for Religion and Public Life

The Centre for Religion and Public Life at the University of Leeds is a hub for research into the important, and increasingly contentious, role of religion in public life in the world today, both locally, nationally and internationally. It provide a forum in which contemporary research and scholarship can be debated and disseminated. The Centre works closely with non-academic partners to identify the ways in which religion is relevant to their work and to produce research that is capable of meeting their need to better understand the nature of religion and religious organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
