Epic Adventure

In celebration of one of the most well known outdoor adventure destinations re-opening after an 8-month covid shut down, I bring you The Adventurous Route to Machu Picchu. I have to warn you in advance, this is a long read and might have to wait until lunchtime...oh wait, you watch the lunch break videos at lunch...so maybe before bed tonight. If you're missing travel like I am, this motorcycle adventure to Machu Picchu might satiate you slightly. For those of you that don't know, Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel, located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru, on a 2,430-metre (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. This spot is at the top of my travel list, so maybe in 2022? (17 min read)

Are You a Map/Compass Or A Smart Phone Person?

This article is about Overlanding, but the same issue applies to all of our outdoor adventures, whether it's hiking, biking, or camping... do you like to be on or off the grid? The idea of "remote" areas has changed fundamentally, thanks to technology. Whether we're out for a day hike or on a backpacking trip, we always have our Garmin Inreach to check a map or text the teenagers back home. For this family, it's a little more extreme: When we circumnavigated South America, we did so without any apps other than unreliable navigation apps. Heck, we didn’t even have a GPS. 200g vs 400g Insulated Winter Hiking Boots: How to Choose

I just had this debate with myself when upgrading my winter footwear this year. From my research, 200g is good to -25 degrees Celcius (Siri tells me that's -13 degrees F). I ended up with the 200g Oboz Sapphire and they are very warm, comfy and have good grip. Frankly, if it's colder out than -25C, I'm probably not going out for a hike anyway. ;) (1 min read)

Race and privilege in the outdoors

I love me some Andrew Skurka, especially this series on Women. If you don't know who he is, here are some of his descriptors: "a superman among trekkers” and “one of the best travelled and fastest hikers on the planet.” On his website, he has all manner of informative articles, but recently he realized that there was a need for more female-specific articles and started his Women series. And no, he didn't write about topics like female hygiene and harassment himself. Instead, he asked Teresa Hagerty, founder of Outdoor Mountain Adventures, and Alexandra Lev to help him out.
