During the pandemic, Anne has been working on new techniques, creating vessels and hollowware from flat sheets of copper. The hollowware vessels are created using a round disk of copper which is repeatedly hammered in concentric circles on a metal stake to gradually “raise” the disk from flat to a three dimensional vessel. A vessel may have 10-15 “courses” of hammering. In between each course of raising, the piece must be annealed with a torch and then cleaned with acid.
Once the vessel form is complete, she may fill it with tar to prevent it from collapsing and add decorative chasing elements using a hammer and chisels.
The tar is then melted out, and the vessel cleaned.
The vessel in the middle is a “David Huang-inspired” vessel. It has 23 K gold leaf inside and fine silver on the rim.
