News from the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation                     November 2020
Education looks different. From remote learning to alternative classrooms, teachers and students are finding new ways to connect and succeed, and CEEF grants are right there with them. With adaptable classrooms in Natureland, moveable furniture in the libraries, and books to support remote readers, CEEF grants are always about innovation. With your help, CEEF can continue to fund these outside-the-budget projects. Innovation continues beyond the traditional classroom, and by donating to CEEF, YOU make all the difference.

Wherever the classroom, CEEF is there!

We're always thrilled to see the impact and evolution that CEEF grants have on our schools and are incredibly grateful to the donors who make this work possible. We recognize it is more important, now than ever, that CEEF helps meet the needs of our school community in these unprecedented times. Here are a few grants that are prospering in these challenging times.

CEEF Mindfulness Grant

Bringing Mindfulness to CEMS

Building on the work of the CEEF Mindfulness Grant and the success of the pilot program, CEMS was excited to announce this fall a grant partnership with an organization called Mindfulness Director Initiative. Through this partnership, the Cape Elizabeth Schools have brought Erica Marcus on board as a part-time Mindfulness Director – at no cost to the school. This amazing opportunity will be expanded to benefit all teachers, students (and parents!) and will help the growth of social emotional programs within the Cape Elizabeth Community.

Beekeeping Club

Since CEEF's initial funding, the CEHS Beekeeping Club continues to grow, now selling their very own honey and beeswax products! The CEEF grant helped club founders attend beekeeping classes at the Honey Exchange in Portland with invaluable learnings from true professionals. As for the pandemic and masks, Haley says "...it doesn’t seem like much of a modification, just another layer to our protective gear!

CEEF Pond Cove Persona Dolls Grant

Persona Dolls

This exciting project is unlike anything done before in early childhood education in Cape Elizabeth! Through the hard work of Bri Gallagher and Amanda Marsden at Pond Cove, this Fall 2020 grant is designed to bring anti-racist teaching and learning into early childhood classrooms through an engaging, interactive, and community building experience. Persona Dolls foster skills needed for standing up against teasing and other forms of bias.

Multimodal Learning

Funded in Spring 2018, this important grant provided much needed technology to students receiving speech and language services in CEHS, CEMS & Pond Cove. Speech-Language Pathologist Erin Nelson tells CEEF, "The equipment that we received from the grant has been a life saver during the pandemic! Now the projector and whiteboards allow us to safely maintain the proper social distance and still have students share their work or use apps for therapy. While both students and I continue to adjust to all of the precautions put into place, I can safely say that the equipment we received from your grant has made the transition to this new learning environment much easier. Thank you!”

Remote Learning: A CEMS Experience

Phoebe CatonAs a 7th Grader at Cape Elizabeth Middle School, it never occurred to me that something like COVID-19 was possible nor that it could alter human behavior and communities over the world. COVID-19 has made a lot of people nervous, including myself at times. I have been fortunate to continue my school studies with few distractions by remote learning. I too am disappointed in not being with my friends at school, but I realize that there are people all over the world, including kids my age or younger, that have to deal with and overcome challenges a lot bigger than mine. This COVID-19 experience is very humbling for me. Masking-up and hand-washing will be with us for a long-time to come, but our community continues to work closely together to help one another (six feet apart and sometimes remote, of course!). No doubt the pandemic has marked the world. I am confident that this will make us stronger and able to overcome other challenges in the future.  - Phoebe Caton
