Those Who Harvest
Monthly Newsletter

Hi there,

Greetings from the farm! Finally making our way into December, we officially have just one month left before ringing in 2021, and putting this rollercoaster of a year behind us all. With the start of the holiday season and the new year around the corner, there are some changes in the air, and some updates that we'd like to share with you!

Bushrah harvesting some onions. Once all picked, the bed is then clear for planting our next crop - in this case, sweetcorn!

Updates from our Fields and Gardens

November was, for us, a very trying month which brought along with it a host of unforeseen hiccups and hurdles. Having stray dogs break into our chicken coop and as a result bidding farewell to feathery friends, faithful customers moving away, mole-rats destroying buchu plants, and francolin pecking out newly sprouted sweetcorn, brinjal and bean plants, are but some of the factors which have lately amounted to a character-testing combination. But as is with the balance of nature, these were all counter-weighted by several heart-warming milestones, like offering our first full harvest of honey as Add-ons to our Boxes; a record-breaking harvest of garlic which included Egyptian Pink for the first time; and our apple orchard block, trial mango, cherry, avocado, plum and Thai lime trees all showing signs of settling in nicely and growing happily with dark green leaves, vigorous new growth, and several of them already producing healthy, luscious fruit (most of which we thinned out in order to channel the trees' energy towards growing instead). Perhaps most importantly, we finally moved our borehole pump over to solar power, meaning that our water supply is now completely off-grid and Eskom-free!

Over the past few years, December has always proven to be the busiest and most intense time of year for the farm, in terms of harvest and production. This year is shaping up to follow the trend - our peaches are growing steadily, and our veggie crops are all setting up for peak harvest in the next three to four weeks, so look out for an abundance of cocktail tomatoes, baby marrows, sweetcorn, brinjals, jalapeños, pumpkins, peppers, and beans amongst others!

Our Organic Lemon Atchar and 100% Pure Raw Honey - great gifts for the festive season.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing everyone celebrating over this season, happy holidays and good times! With the approaching of the festive season and the time for gifting and sharing, we'd like to remind you about our Lemon Atchar and Honey Add-ons - as local, plastic-free items produced by yours truly, small businesses and farmers, they make great ethical gifts. We will also continue collecting orders for Donation Boxes over this period, offering some of our harvest to those in need, with your help. Farmstalls and Coffee Shops

This past month has seen some wonderful developments on our side, in terms of logistics and collections! We have teamed up with Desert Rose, a delightful farm stall on the N7 turnoff towards Koringberg. This is a great addition for us - we will be supplying them with our Boxes on a weekly basis, for Swartlanders to come and collect, and we could not be happier at the prospect of offering our produce to more nearby people! If you are ever on your way to the Cederberg, Namaqualand or Namibia, pop by for a treat and some of our fresh produce.

On the Cape Town side of things, we are in the process of launching a partnership with Bree Street coffee shop and art studio, The Ladder on 136 - the main aim of which will be us adding it as a collection option for Cape Town City Bowl orders, expanding the possibilities for times and locations of collection, and offering our Boxes to more people! We also have some exciting little aspects to the partnership which will be revealed in due course...

Some of the lovely thank-you letters we have received from the girls at Ons Plek in Mowbray, for produce comprised of Donation Bags and our surplus harvest.
