8 highlights for 8 program weeks

Student Empowerment
LIT HS students run education candidate forums. Check out in the press here.

As our country waits for Presidential election results and all eyes are on our beloved Silver State, we are sending a quick update of all the good we've been able to achieve because of your support. We started Year 9 of LIT eight weeks ago because you believe every student has the right to an equitable opportunity for college graduation and community leadership. A world-wide pandemic will not stop our collective efforts to empower change from the community, for the community when Las Vegas needs it most. Thank you for being the fuel to our journey. We send lots of love from Nevada!

College Access

Cohort 6 high school seniors continue attending their 4th year of LIT either virtually or in-person. We have celebrated over 20 college acceptances already this school year.

Postsecondary Support

NSHE Chancellor Focus Groups
New NSHE Chancellor Dr. Rose came to LIT in her new tenure to ensure she could learn from students themselves and  led a focus group with some of our UNR, UNLV, NSC & CSN students. LIT continues to support students through virtual learning.
Connectivity Dinners
To combat social isolation, LIT safely hosted connectivity dinners for all of our 83 Postsecondary students who attend college at 13 different institutions in 8 different states. Despite COVID-19, LIT has an 88% college persistence rate.

Community Partners

United Way of Southern NV Day of Caring
UWSN volunteers came out to LIT on NV's biggest volunteering day of the year and assembled care bags for all our students to encourage them for a great start to the school year. Thank you as well to our College Mentors, Chicanos Por La Causa, Rob Donnelly, Walker College Consultants, Drake Allsop, CareerLife & Michael Makkonen for volunteering with LIT's HS, Postsecondary & Alumni programs.
COVID-19 Patient Support Center
Cohort 8 high school sophomores continue their internships. Pictured: Leader Esli participating in her weekly virtual internship supporting COVID-19 positive patients to receive free groceries. LIT students have also volunteered with: The Just One Project, NV Prep, ACDC, the Choice Neighborhood, Teach for India Bangalore, Teach For America Las Vegas, Las Vegas Lights & Puentes.

Leadership Speakers

Sharaf & Athar Haseebullah
Cohort 9 high school freshman still joined LIT this school year despite virtual learning. In a social distant manner, we've been able to continue our motivational leadership speaker series kicked off by Sharaf Haseebullah inspiring students with her story of being the first woman to ever use her own finances to build a mosque. Thank you to UNLV School of Medicine, Roseman University of Health Sciences, AT&T NV, Nayeli Rico Lopez, Michelle St. Angelo, Boston University, Retired State Senator Valerie Wiener & Chapman University for being leadership speakers.
Junior Achieves
LIT is excited to announce our program was chosen to partner with Junior Achieves Elevating Teens program this school year. Each month Junior Achieves members, who are professional women dedicated to serving the community, share about their college experience
and professional advice based on what students said they want to learn about. Thank you to our September & October panelists: Christina Moon, Kathleen Armstrong, Katie Campbell, Tya Mathis-Coleman, Sarah Kirchberg, Jenny Lehner, Jordan Montet, Myra Dvorak & Blakely Griffith.
