1st EOOS Technology Forum

On 13 October 2020, the 1st EOOS Technology Forum brought together 77 participants from 11 European countries, the United States, Canada, and Argentina to discuss technological innovation in ocean observing, exchange best practices, and explore new opportunities for public-private collaboration. The forum created a much-needed platform through which marine instrument manufacturers, technicians, technologists and scientists could share information, raise important questions, and build synergies. The event was organized by EuroGOOS through its Technology Plan Working Group and was hosted virtually by SeaTechWeek. Discover the event’s summary, presentations, and video recordings on the EOOS website.
EuroGOOS High Frequency Radar Task Team and EuroGOOS members featured in Copernicus Observer

The contribution of EuroGOOS members and activities to the operational Copernicus Marine portfolio were highlighted in a Copernicus Observer article published on 15 October. Two examples were outlined: INCREASE, a Copernicus Marine Service Evolution project led by AZTI, which laid the groundwork for the integration of the existing European high frequency radar (HFR) operational systems into the Copernicus Marine portfolio; and IBISAR, a new operational and coastal service developed by SOCIB, which uses the Copernicus Marine HFR product to facilitate Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. The article also featured an interactive map developed by the EuroGOOS High Frequency Radar Task Team, which indicates the location of 105 EU HFRs.

New Horizon 2020 project kicks off: MISSION ATLANTIC – Towards the Sustainable Development of the Atlantic Ocean

In September 2020, the EU-funded project MISSION ATLANTIC was launched, bringing together participants from Brazil, South Africa, North America, and the EU, including seven EuroGOOS members (AZTI, IMR, NOC, Ifremer, PLOCAN, Marine Institute, and IEO). The project will map, model, and assess Atlantic Ocean ecosystems, focusing on their resilience and response to climate change, exploitation, and pollution. Learn more about the project.

NAOS project: A new generation of Argo floats to tackle the future challenges of ocean observations

The NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project, coordinated by EuroGOOS member Ifremer and Sorbonne University, came to an end this September after 10 years of technological developments. The main objective of NAOS was to enhance French and European contribution to the international Argo observing system and prepare the next phase of Argo. Read more about the scientific achievements of the NAOS project.
MOCCA project comes to an end

The MOCCA Project (Monitoring the Oceans and Climate Change with Argo), running from 2015 to 2020 under the coordination of the Euro-Argo ERIC Office, enabled the deployment of 150 new floats measuring temperature and salinity and provided more than 20,000 quality-controlled data to the scientific community. To mark the successful conclusion of the project, Euro-Argo ERIC summarized the MOCCA achievements in a leaflet and a three-minute presentation available here.
Bringing ocean literacy to Trieste NEXT Science Festival

On 23-27 September, the Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), member of EuroGOOS and the EuroGOOS Ocean Literacy Network, participated in the Trieste NEXT Science Festival. The science festival serves as a hub for innovation and a springboard for new ideas on how science and technology can address key societal challenges. Under this year's theme, ‘Science for the Planet: 100 proposals for future life’, the OGS Ocean Literacy Group offered the public the opportunity to explore our individual and collective impact on the ocean as well as its influence on our daily lives. The group also encouraged young people to make responsible and informed decisions regarding the ocean. Read more here.

Have your say on the European Commission’s Inception Impact Assessment on ocean observation

The European Commission Inception Impact Assessment on ocean observation is open for feedback until 19 November 2020. The initiative aims to develop a coherent approach to European ocean observation, based on a joint planning of observation activities and a framework for collaboration at the national and EU level. To speak with one voice, the EuroGOOS Office will coordinate a EuroGOOS response and will circulate a draft for comments among members. Learn more about the initiative.
The first 'Call for Decade Actions' is now open

On 15 October, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO launched the first ‘Call for Decade Actions’, under which partners can submit programmes, projects, or activities that contribute to the Ocean Decade vision. The call focuses on large-scale, multi-country, transformative Decade programmes, as well as on large-scale contributions of in-kind or financial resources for Decade Actions or coordination costs. Participants are invited to submit their request for endorsement for their programme or contribution before 15 January 2021. A virtual session providing additional information on the call is scheduled for 6 November 2020. Read more about this initiative and register here.
