Events
Boulder Ecosystem Summit
Now - Thursday, November 19
You're invited to a set of interactive webinars on ecosystems and their impact on our community. The CU Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities, in partnership with the City of Boulder, Boulder County, and the Community Foundation, is hosting panels to enhance community awareness and galvanize action toward environmental sustainability. Participants will engage in a forum to ask questions and share ideas. Each segment will profile opportunities for active participation by community members.

Tues. Nov. 17, 11:30-1:00 p.m.: Watershed Health and Air Quality. Trends in Boulder's snow pack, land cover, and stream macroinvertebrates; community involvement; trends in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants; health impact of emissions and pollution. Moderated by ENVS associate professor Amanda Carrico.
Thurs. Nov. 19, 4:00-5:30 p.m.: Biodiversity and Urban Land Cover. Status and trends in Boulder's birds, bees and black bears; community involvement; Boulder's urban tree canopy and its importance to biodiversity and human health. Moderated by ENVS assistant professor Karen Bailey.
CIRES/NOAA Science@Home webinars
Tuesdays, 1:00-1:30 p.m., through December 1.
Please share with K-12 educators and homeschooling parents in your network! CIRES/NOAA Science@Home webinars are designed to connect middle and high school classrooms that are now in the virtual/remote learning landscape with scientists. Each webinar features a 10-15 minute presentation by a scientist about how they got into science, what they do at work, and what it is that they research, followed by 10-15 minutes of live Q&A.

Community-engaged scholarship coffee hour
Community engagement online
Thursday, November 19, 12:00-1:00 p.m.
CU Boulder faculty, staff and students are invited to join The Office for Outreach and Engagement and CU Engage for this month's coffee hour via Zoom to discuss how we have built community online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees will share and discuss practices for building community online and in informal learning settings. Coffee hours are held the third Thursday from September to November and January to April. Fiske Planetarium Science under the Dome talk
Fires, flooding, heat waves, drought: Extreme events in a changing climate
Thursday, November 19, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Join Fiske Planetarium for a talk by Erika Shreiber, a recent CU Geography PhD, in Fiske's Climate Change In Our Backyard track of the Science Under the Dome series. She will explore the link between extreme weather and climate change. Wildfires in the west have broken records and affected air quality across much of the country. There have been so many storms that the National Hurricane Center has run out of names for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. Has climate change contributed to these events? Are they becoming more frequent? We'll talk about the mechanisms through which these events can be influenced by climate change and what we can expect to see in the future. Coloring the Conservation Conversation
Monday, November 23, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Dr. J. Drew Lanham, a professor of wildlife ecology at Clemson University and author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature, will discuss what it means to embrace the full breadth of his African-American heritage and his deep kinship to nature and love of birds. The convergence of ornithologist, college professor, poet, author and conservation activist blend to bring our awareness of the natural world and our moral responsibility for it forward in new ways. Candid by nature—and because of it—Lanham will examine how conservation must be a rigorous science and evocative art, inviting diversity and race to play active roles in celebrating our natural world. CU's Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities (CSLC) collaborated with the City of Boulder’s Climate Initiatives Division to host a gathering on cities, ecosystems and climate change. An outcome of this event was a way to regularly track and communicate the status and trends of Boulder County’s ecosystems and ecosystem services, including the health of Boulder's climate, soil, water, air, biodiversity, and urban land cover. The Office for Outreach and Engagement has recently completed a redesign of the CU Boulder Community Outreach and Engagement Programs website, which showcases nearly 200 programs from every college and school. These programs benefit more than 380,000 people each year through K-12 initiatives, legal clinics, business workshops, public lectures and performances, science collaborations, community-based development projects and more, many in communities with limited access to university resources. In addition, millions of people use CU Boulder online resources. More than 13,000 faculty, staff, and students lead these programs.
