November e-Newsletter

In our November e-Newsletter, we pay tribute to our fabulous line-up of workshop presenters.  It's been so inspiring to see each of them take courses that they would normally present in person at our City of Boroondara offices and deliver them to a virtual audience.

As you can imagine, talking to a laptop screen for up to two and a half hours takes a bit of adapting.  Unperturbed by the new online format, our presenters have pulled it off seamlessly, engaging and energising audiences by keeping sessions informative, interactive and responding to attendee questions as they come up.  They've also drawn on and shared their own experiences, delivering sessions that aren't solely based on theory, much to the benefit of our business community.

And while we're on the subject of our local business community, the City of Boroondara has just launched a new business directory as part of their Love Local Life campaign.  Showcasing the breadth and variety of businesses located within Boroondara, this free platform will allow you to promote your latest products and services.  Details of how you can get involved are included below.

It's always a pleasure to be able to feature local businesses in the eNewsletter and this month is no exception with two more being highlighted.  Do you have, or know of, a business that's unique to Boroondara that could be included in this newsletter or via our @boroondaralife social channels? If so, send an email to business@boroondara.vic.gov.au to find out how you can take advantage of this free offer.

Lastly, don't forget to check out our final workshops for the year as well at the Skilled Volunteer Meetup, and if you have a friend who could benefit from some support for their business make sure you forward them this newsletter or encourage them to sign up!

Wolfpack Games

The risks associated with excessive periods of screen time consumption is well documented. Research commonly highlights issues with blurred vision, eye strain and headaches.  There is also widespread anxiety over the inherent harm to children regarding inappropriate content exposure and safety risks.  While these plus other factors have led many people to place limitations on daily screen time, there are new fears that the COVID climate has led to a generalised laxity of control as we struggle to reorient our lives.

Wolfpack Games, located in Ashburton is a small family business established three years ago.  With a passion for playing games and tired of plastic and throw away products, Wolfpack Games specialise in exceptional quality, ethically sourced wooden games.  Backed by sustainable certification and the use of lead-free paint, the games are not only beautiful but incredibly engaging, cognitively stimulating and fun!

“Both my wife and I have always been conscious of limiting our children's' time on screens.  We enjoy spending a lot of family time playing games together.  So, after more than twenty years in corporate sales, the decision to launch Wolfpack Games opened exciting opportunities to pursue and share my passion for a diverse range of hand-selected products,” says Craig Woolf, founding owner.

Initially, Wolfpack Games were sold at markets and festivals before finding a retail home in the Ashburton arcade and pop-up kiosks in shopping centres.  While the focus has always been on meeting a wide range of needs for cognitive stimulation, development and fun.

Backyard Honey, based in Surrey Hills is a small local business owned by Peter and Jane Dyer.  "Inspired to pursue our bee-keeping passion, we developed an urban apiary experience whereby residents with little to no prior knowledge or experience can host a self-sustaining hive and harvest 100% pure raw local honey from their own backyards," says Peter and Jane.

100% all-natural, our premium quality Backyard Honey is cold extracted, unpasteurised, chemical-free and contains all-natural nutritional goodness. The harvesting and packaging process retains maximum bio-activity, vitamins, minerals, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.  Backyard Honey was awarded a SILVER Medal at 2019 Australian Food Awards.

"We have worked with beekeepers around the world including UK; Germany; Romania; Turkey; Sri Lanka and SW America.  Proudly, we provide safe and responsible apiary services (hive maintenance, swarm removal, honey harvesting and incursions) to residential and commercial clientele.

With the COVID climate casting uncertainty, there's never been a better time to contribute to our food source, health and the general well-being of the local community. Rent Relief

Did you know that small business tenants and landlords can now access the Victorian Small Business Commission’s latest rent relief advice in English (click here), Simplified Chinese (click here), Arabic (click here) and Vietnamese (click here).

The new fact sheets explain the support being provided under the Victorian Government’s Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme (the Scheme), which aims to ease financial hardship faced by tenants and landlords as a result of the pandemic.

The fact sheets include:

- What tenants need to do as soon as possible to access rent relief under the Scheme, now that it’s been changed and extended until the end of the year

- Access to a letter that tenants can use to ask for rent relief (they just need to fill in the highlighted parts)

- A scenario showing what rent relief negotiations can look like.

The team can talk with tenants and landlords early on, and bring them together with an experienced mediator and interpreter to help resolve their dispute at no cost.

If a tenant or landlord would like to speak with the Commission in their language, they can call through the Translating and Interpreting Service (click here).
