Welcome to the 2021 Motatapu!
We are thrilled to announce the iconic Motatapu off-road sporting event will be back in 2021 and we have plenty of exciting news to share.
Firstly the 17th edition of the event will see the return of the one day format, with the Mountain Bike Race, Off-road Marathon, Ultra Run and Miners Trail on offer.
Plus all entries fees have been reduced to help make it easier for more people to participate and join us out in the stunning Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe stations.
We have moved the date of the race to the 6th March 2021, so we don't clash with the Wanaka A&P show, which we believe is an excellent way of allowing people to join in with both events. It will also spread the visitors out over the period, easing pressure on accommodation providers and the community.
We would like to thank all of the loyal fans for their patience as we know you have been eager to lock in your spot so here goes!
Registrations are open now via our website www.Motatapu.com
And lastly but by no means least, we are super excited to announce that past Motatapu Race Directors, Gemma Peskett (nee Boyle) and Craig Gallagher have bought this epic event from IRONMAN Oceania, who have owned and operated it for the past three years.
Gemma and Craig are Queenstown based event specialists with a real passion for the Motatapu and a commitment to their communities. Their aim is to not only create an amazing event but also entice new visitors to the region to explore, enjoy and race in this epic slice of paradise.
Gemma has worked on the event for ten years and been Motatapu Race Director for multiple editions. She has a wealth of event experience, also working on the Kathmandu Coast to Coast and Winter Games NZ for many years. Craig has been the Miners Trail Director, amongst other Motatapu roles and is well known locally for managing QLDC’s New Year’s Eve, co-managing LUMA and for eight years was involved in the Queenstown Winter Festival.
Gemma and Craig are carrying on the commitment to the Queenstown Trails Trust, as Official Charity Partner, with $7 of every entry going towards the ongoing maintenance and development of trails within the Wakatipu Basin. They are also working closely with landowners and local businesses to make sure the event listens and works alongside the community and gives back a lastly legacy to Central Otago.
The Motatapu team looks forward to keeping you updated with all the latest news, what you need to bring for your big adventure and helpful tips and tricks to have the best day via email, on our website and via our social channels.
We will be updating all of the event details, such as start times in the coming weeks, as these are currently being reviewed for all races to ensure competitors have an enjoyable and safe day out on the race course. But rest assured the Mountain Bike Race, Off-Road Marathon, Ultra Run and Miners Trail will be back in 2021 on the same course, just all on one day!
