Outsider of the Month

Our first ever 'Outsider of the Month' is the lovely Chris Cocum from Brighton who works as a property developer. He spends as much time as possible outdoors with his Hungarian Vizsla, Torby. We caught up with him (yes, virtually) for a mini-interview and here's what he had to say...
So Chris, what is hiking to you?
Hiking provides the opportunity to be purely proactive, which I find to be increasingly rare in the modern world. Particularly now with our reactive relationship to our phones, emails, social media accounts this proactive approach does wonders for the mind, body and soul. As a big believer in the benefits of the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) I like the structure that hiking brings to this  valuable pastime. I feel that travelling by foot is such a common experience across mankind that, especially when hikes explore an area of historical significance or interest, the sense of shared humanity is also extremely enjoyable.”
How would you persuade someone to go hiking if they'd never been before?
“There will be something for everyone. Whether you are in it for the fitness, the beauty, the ponds or the pints you won't be disappointed. It can be an excellent way to explore a new area and also a brilliant way to spend quality time with  your family, friends and four-legged companions.”

What are your pearls of hiking wisdom?
“Put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’, and always take your waterproofs!”

Chris, we love you! Check out Chris (and his Outsider profile) here

News From the Trails; Inclusivity is Key
A non-profit organisation called 'Black Girls Hike' is working to provide a safe space for Black women to explore the countryside with like-minded individuals.
In the face of the vast lack of diversity in the hiking and outdoor world, Rhiane Fatinikun is on a mission to turn this around. Ms Fatinikun has created a community called Black Girls Hike (BGH), for women of colour to feel more included in the UK outdoors scene. BGH organises group hikes around the UK countryside and is helping to encourage young black women to get outside and get hiking.
The solidarity and inclusion that the group champions makes the outdoors a much more accessible and friendly place for these women. Of course, there is a larger, deeper-rooted problem concerning the general diversity gap in the outdoors as a whole, and the under-representation of minority groups in public parks, green spaces and outdoor activities. This however, is a great step in the right direction.
