Hello Jubilants,
I write to you on Wednesday morning. By the time you read this, the final results of the election may or may not be known. Whichever way the narrow slice lands, it is clear that we remain a nation divided. My heart has been prepared for violence in these coming days. I guess that’s why months ago when we wrote the Seeds for this Via, I chose “disrupting peace” for this Sunday. Whether the violence will be in the streets or in the words of our leaders or in the center of my own soul, I do not know.

Anne Wray graciously sent me quotes and this one seems apropos today: “One of the titles by which Jesus is known is Prince of Peace, and he used the word himself in what seems at first glance to be two radically contradictory utterances. On one occasion he said to the disciples, ‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.’ (Matthew 10:34) And later on, the last time they ate together, he said to them, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.’ (John 14:27)

The contradiction is resolved when you realize that for Jesus peace seems to have meant not the absence of struggle but the presence of love.” ~ Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking

Many have said we are in a fight for the soul of our nation. I also believe we are in a fight for our own souls. I wonder if we can have the faith of a 14-year-old forced into hiding for more than two years. Anne Frank wrote in her diary: “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us, too. I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.”

Come Sunday as we explore what power lies in the disruption of peace.

JUBILEE! COMMUNITY'S PLEDGE CAMPAIGN 2021
Sustaining A Courageous Community of Love

From now until December 6th, we invite you to make your financial pledge for 2021.  Your pledge is one way you can say, “Count me in. I’ve cast my vote for of this movement of hope –with my heart, prayers and resources.”

At this major intersection in our life as a nation and as a global community, it is communities like Jubilee! that will have to show the way into that new world of unity, inclusion and compassion that is being born.  And courageous love is the only way to get there.

Our campaign theme, “Sustaining a Courageous Community of Love” says we at Jubilee! intend to keep practicing courageous love.  Even when we’re not doing it as well as we want, we are helping show our world the right direction.

How to make your pledge to help Sustain this Courageous Community of Love:
  • Our Board co-chair, Bruce Mulkey, is sending you a letter this week explaining the campaign and showing you how to participate.  His letter may come by US Postal Service or email, or both.  If you’re not sure we have your preferred contact info, let Patrick Fitzsimmons know (828-777-2495 or patrickfitzsimmons@hotmail.com).
  • You can pledge on our new website, https://jubileecommunity.org  See the drop-down under the Donate link or click this:  https://jubileecommunity.org/make-a-pledge/
  • During our Sunday Celebrations, we’ll have a link to Pledge in the Chat box.
On one Sunday, an outreach partner will tell how the money you give to our Hunger Basket is helping so many.  On other Sundays, Jubilants will share why they give to the Jubilee! Community.  On Sunday, Dec. 6th, Laura will lead us as we honor and give thanks for your pledges.

Please make your pledge today to help Sustain this Courageous Community of Love.  If what you can pledge is $1.00 a week, the spirit of your commitment will be as valuable as a pledge of $1000 a week.

“The world is now too dangerous and too beautiful for anything but love…” (Rev. Brian Cole, adapted from William Sloan Coffin).   As you consider your pledge, we hope you’ll respond to that thought with “O’yeah! & I’m in!”

As part of the launch of our new website, we are asking Jubilants to help update our community directory.  Between now and December 1st, we'll be collecting contact info and photos.  Then a few weeks later, we will go live with a password protected directory on the website so that we can all stay in touch with each other.  So please help us update the directory by clicking here, filling in the form and emailing us your photo by December 1st.

STILL TWO DAYS LEFT TO FIND BALANCE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
Join local spiritual leaders, meditation teachers, and musicians as we hold a space to sow seeds of love, harmony and balance. We live in a time of incredible divisiveness, and nothing shows us more than that then the upcoming election. There is so much fear, misinformation, and possible disruption.  And yet, we all know and love people on the other side of the aisle.  Please join us for the final two days of this healing event.

THE MAGNIFICENCE OF NATURE  ~  THE CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE CHAOS
The beauty and grandeur of animals and landscapes in natural areas can be awe-inspiring.  The power and destructive forces of an altered climate can be alarming.  Please join Dr. Roger Helm as he explores both of these realities.  Sponsored by Jubliee!’s Earth Team, Dr. Helm’s Zoom presentations will help us understand the existential threat climate change driven chaos is unleashing and the solutions at hand.  His presentations will also inspire us to action by reminding us, through photographs from around the world, of the magnificence of nature - part of what is at stake.

GREAT NEWS FOR OUR HOMELESS FRIENDS
The city of Asheville has contracted to continue paying the rent at the Red Roof Inn for the homeless shelter through February. But the people who are living there still need to be fed. Jubilee! is accepting donations for shelter dinners that will hopefully feed them at least once a month through February. We will hire our beloved Delia to cater.  To make a donation, click here and select "designated funds."

Some Ideas for Connecting with our Local Community
LANDLORD-TENANT PARTNERSHIP
Right now, there are families living in public housing that want to move into private rentals, and have financial assistance to do so. But not enough landlords know about the Landlord-Tenant Partnership, and the new supports being offered which can make these moves doable and successful for landlords and tenants. Thrive Asheville’s new Landlord-Tenant Partnership will empower families living in public housing communities to choose safer, more resourced neighborhoods. These types of moves have been shown to be one of the most significant factors in improving life outcomes for children! It’s very likely that there are landlords in your faith community who could hold a part of the solution to the affordable housing crisis. We have information, and a network of supports, and funds - we only need 25 landlords who will join us to make this happen. To learn more about the program, you may want to watch this inspiring video: The Science of Opportunity. You can also see the  webpage with the details here: Landlord-Tenant Partnership Overview
