Deagon Ward E-News

November 2020

G'day,

The Deagon Ward has been a hive of activity over the past month with the community really kicking it into high gear as we approach the Christmas holidays. This has been a welcome return to community events for me and a great chance to get back out and about. The opportunity to attend the Brighton State School centenary celebration was undoubtedly a highlight especially when considering the local and state-wide attention it attracted.

The Governor Paul de Jersey AC and his wife attended the centenary in addition to our local member Stirling Hinchliffe, describing the appreciation our community has for the hard work this local school does on a daily basis. The leadership provided by Principal Mr Scott Padget and the P&C is nothing short of admirable and I am sure the young pupils have a great foundation to build upon moving forward.

We also had the opportunity to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the momentous Eventide Rally. An event that remains scored into local history as a truly grassroots effort to save a precious healthcare asset here on the Northside. Taking a moment to remember the united effort put in by so many among our community is absolutely worthwhile.

On that note, here within the Deagon Ward we can all appreciate the presence of so many outstanding local characters that fly under the radar. Now is the chance for them to be recognised publicly in the annual Deagon Legends Award. We all have a mate that we are particularly proud of and I encourage you to take five minutes to nominate them for this award.

More information regarding this can be found here.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

Sandgate Youth Festival - Fifth Dynasty take the win!

Once again the Sandgate Youth Festival was a stunning display of the abundance of talent we have here on the Northside.

The night showcased artists from a diverse range of backgrounds - dancers, vocalists, guitarists and solo acts all provided unique performances giving the three judges a difficult task on the night.

At the conclusion of the night Fifth Dynasty emerged victorious, closely beating out rising local guitarist and singer Joe Beveridge to take the crown.

A special mention must be made to the sponsors who made this event possible. Given the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the event and the wider community in general it was important to give these artists a stage on which to perform.

In the absence of other opportunities, the Festival continues to be a platform for our young talent looking to showcase their skills.

Thankyou to Beat Connection, Anika Wells MP, Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Kuhn Corp Print & Packaging for making a grass roots event like the SYF possible.

BEE BARRAGE - Boondall Wetlands

The Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre had to be temporarily closed in early November due to an "aggressive" swarm of bees affecting the centre and surrounding walking tracks.

An attempt was made to remove these bees by the centre staff but the team was repelled by dangerous swarming and the volatile behaviour of the bees. Consequently further action will be undertaken to resolve the situation with BCC not expecting the centre to be closed any longer than three days.

While this is not expected to be an ongoing issue with the use and enjoyment of the Boondall Wetlands, it is a reminder to be aware of our surroundings. Appreciating that our local flora and flora is not always without risk is an important lesson to learn when enjoying the great natural resources the Northside has to offer.

World Teachers Day - FREE COFFEE

On October 30 we celebrated World Teachers day!

Our educators are an absolutely essential part of our community and taking a day to appreciate their tireless efforts is very important.

Stirling Hinchliffe MP took the opportunity to put this appreciation into action and shouted free coffee for the teachers at Sandgate State School!

8th Anniversary of the Eventide Rally

This October the 27th we remember the power of our local community. The Eventide Rally remains of of the greatest community events in recent memory and is a testament to our ability to stand up for the things we believe in.

Cuts to essential healthcare services has never been and will never be the answer.

Through a joint effort of local members Stirling Hinchliffe, Wayne Swan MP and Cr Victoria Newton Eventide remains a valued local service provider to this day.

The facility also participated in invaluable COVID-19 testing throughout the most recent crisis, showing the facilities adaptability and capacity to care for our community moving forward.

MOVEMBER - MENS HEALTH

Every November, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world.

The aim of this facial furniture growth is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male mental health.

A great cause with a proven track record, Councillor Jared Cassidy has thrown his hat into the ring shaving off a once thick beard in support.
