Dear ACLP Family,

FSP sessions cancellation for the 2020-2021 school year. We hope you are doing well during these challenging times. Our hearts go out to African diaspora people suffering injustices here in Philadelphia and America, the African continent, and around the world. We wanted to share a few updates about African Community Learning Program (ACLP) and our Future Scholars Program (FSP). Due to the pandemic, our students are dealing with long virtual learning hours, and this has impacted their enrollment and attendance or our FSP sessions. Unfortunately, we have cancelled our FSP sessions for the rest of the 2020-2021
school year. Still, through our FSP work, we maintain many resources for high school students on our website to support them in college preparation and achievement. ACLP’s leaders will also continuously share on our website  personal stories about their college experiences and advice. Please share these resources with high school students in Philadelphia and beyond! It was ACLP’s pleasure to teach our students! We will continue ACLP’s work in other capacities.

Good news for ACLP and its leaders. ACLP and its leaders will be recognized with Philadelphia City citations in celebration of the organization’s three years anniversary of serving students, their families, and the West Philadelphia community as well as its leaders' contributions.

Good news for ACLP community engagement. ACLP and the City of Philadelphia will hold a Senegal flag raising on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 11am at Philadelphia City Hall. The flag pole is on the Northside of City Hall on North Broad & JFK Blvd.

As the weather and leaves are changing from fall to winter this November, we wanted to highlight a few great morning coffee reads. The ACLP Report for 2017-2019 is now available and can help give you a better understanding of ACLP’s goal and trajectory towards accomplishing those goals. An opportunity outside of ACLP that is worth looking into for your student Black Birthright, program which takes Black American high school students to visit Africa to explore and learn about their history and cultural background. You can find more information about Black Birthright here and learn more about the application here.

Studying is an art. Some people can only really get to work when inspired.  Inspiration might come in the form of a deadline, an upcoming test, or even your mom saying you can’t FaceTime your besties until you finish your homework. However, what happens when you can’t find your inspiration? Or, when you're off to college, and your mom can no longer hold your phone hostage? This is where established study patterns and skills can help you stay motivated and prevent you from wasting quality time trying to figure out where and how to start.

Looking back at my expectations freshman year makes me smile, not only because there is no “perfect” major or career, but because I assumed that this is what “finding myself” meant. I focused on an idealized, successful version of myself and projected that image to be the end goal of college. While it is good to have at least a loose plan through college and to set long-term goals, a crucial part of “finding yourself” is looking inwardly in the present. You and I didn’t arrive at college as a blank slate. Finding your major, career, and passions first requires a self-awareness of your identities and the ways they affect how you navigate the world.
