Hello commission members! Welcome to our monthly newsletter for November 2020!
In this issue:

Friday Feels: Election Edition

It's a few days after the election and many of us are feeling a whole range of emotions. Space is needed for us social justice educators to breathe and support each other, as well as find the energy to support our respective staff, student, and campus communities. CSJE and the member development working group invites you to share space with others who do this work. There's no agenda, just an avenue to be present. Join us on Friday, November 6th at 3pm Eastern. Feel free to invite any colleagues into this space.

The Zoom link for the meeting is here:

Passcode: AudreLorde

CSJE Monthly Forum

Please join us for our next CSJE Monthly Forum! Our monthly forums are a chance to dialogue with other student affairs and higher education professionals interested in social justice work. We always start out with a facilitator's choice discussion topic followed by a conversation about opportunities to get involved with the Commission and updates on current projects! This month, we will focus our conversation on what is needed to succeed in facilitating and developing a monthly forum. Join us on Tuesday, November 10th at 3pm Eastern/2pm Central.

CSJE Member Spotlight: Janine Silvis

Janine Silvis is the Assistant Director for Residential Education at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In their role, Janine supervises other professional staff and contributes to the development and implementation of curricular initiatives that address educational needs and enhance awareness of socially relevant issues for residential students.

Janine was born and raised in Tracy, California and has a passion for social justice, a loud voice, a commitment to humor, and probably more eye makeup than most people. Before arriving at UCSC, Janine has served four years as a full-time residence life professional at UCLA, UC Berkeley, and the University of Oregon. Janine obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Humboldt State University and a Masters degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Vermont. Over the years, Janine has developed a passion for restorative justice, sexual assault prevention, residential curriculum development, and student of color advocacy. Outside of work, you can usually find Janine getting a manicure done to match their San Jose Sharks hockey jersey.
