GW4 Alliance Update
October 2020

Welcome to the GW4 newsletter update. I'm Professor Jonathan Knight, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research at the University of Bath and current Chair of GW4 Board. I'm delighted to say we will be announcing the appointment of the interim GW4 Director in the coming weeks, but in the meantime I have the pleasure of sharing some of GW4's latest news and events.

We are proud to support research talent at all levels across the Alliance, from doctoral students and early career researchers to academics and technicians. Our collaborative research communities are going from strength to strength. For example, I was delighted to see a new network launched to improve how overlapping neurodevelopmental conditions are investigated and managed by researchers and clinicians. Such developments help to explain GW4's recent announcement that our return on investment in collaborative research communities is at its highest level since the GW4 Alliance was formally launched in 2014.

I am also pleased to see the first of our GW4 Early Career Symposium events advertised below. Our two successful PGR and ECR teams have organised flagship symposia focusing on two of our priority research areas of Climate and Antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The scheme for next year's Symposia closed this week, and I'm sure successful applicants will gain lots of ideas and tips from this year's inaugural events.

Our technical staff professional registration scheme also closed this week, following a good response rate. All four GW4 institutions are already signatories to the Technicians Commitment and we recently launched GW4WARD - an initiative designed to drive forward the professional development of our technical staff across GW4. The GW4 team will be talking more about this at the Technician Commitment Signatory event next week - more on this in next month's newsletter. For now though, check out all the latest GW4 news and development opportunities below
GW4 research to launch reopening of Bristol’s educational charity We The Curious
A collaborative science project developed by the GW4 research community ‘Secrecy, Power, and Ignorance research Network’, will feature in the reopening of Bristol’s educational charity We The Curious.

We The Curious will reopen next month with a bold new experience Project What If. The launch programme for Project What If is themed around ‘A Better World Is Possible’ and includes ‘The A-Z of Secrecy’ – a collaborative open source science activity developed with the Secrecy, Power, and Ignorance research Network (SPIN).

SPIN is a collaborative research community funded and supported by the GW4 Alliance. The network explores what makes secrecy and ignorance interesting, powerful, and sometimes overlooked. Their research focuses on the power and politics of secrecy and ignorance – at the global, international, state, societal and personal level.

Cherishing our GW4 Treasures

GW4 Treasures brings together the archives and special collections of our four universities. They contain a wealth of rare published and unpublished materials, and cover a huge range of subject areas.

In our latest GW4 Opinion piece Alan Hughes, Head of Special Collections and Archives at Cardiff University, explains how cross-institutional collaborative working ensured these unique materials were kept safe but still accessible for pioneering research during lockdown.
