FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS 

Annalisa Buerke served with the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) on an accreditation site-team visit on October 1-5, 2020. 

Kristen Bugos is now the Secretary/Treasurer for the Minnesota state unit of the Society for Music Teacher Education (MNSMTE), a society of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). 

Dale Lemke published the article “Perceptions of Career Agency and Career Calling in Mid-Career: A Qualitative Investigation” in Journal of Career Assessment, September 2020. 

Matt Miller presented the paper “Eastern Christianity in the Twin Cities: The Churches of Minneapolis and St. Paul since 1989,” for a virtual conference on “Global Orthodoxy,” hosted by the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, on September 30. 

As a result of COVID this spring, Melissa Mork joined a number of Northwestern radio stations around the country to talk about ways to cope during a pandemic, including a Facebook live event with KTIS and podcasts with hosts in Sioux Falls, Kansas City, Champaign, and Des Moines. She is also a regularly recurring guest with Susie Larson on Faith Radio. Over the spring and summer, Melissa presented (via Zoom) to numerous grief coalitions, cancer support groups, and human resource agencies on topics of grief, mental health, coping, and self-care. 

Lisanne Winslow’s book was published this month, A Great and Remarkable Analogy: The Onto-Typology of Jonathan Edwards. Yale University Jonathan Edwards Center, “New Directions in Edwards Series.” Göttingen:Vandenhoek and Ruprecht Publishers, 2020.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

STUDENT/ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS 

Tiffany (Malecha) Kortbein (Elementary Education ’13) was awarded the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAIC) 2020 Outstanding Award. Tiffany teaches at Greenvale Park Elementary School in Northfield, Minnesota. 

Eagle 7 News students, Scott Krueger and Emily Linden, enjoyed their opportunity to interview Kirk Cousins, quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. 

Career Development hosted an alternative chapel in September, “How God is Working in Accounting and Finance Careers” featuring alumni Dustin Stoltz (Finance ’08), Associate Director of Finance of Optum at UnitedHealth Group, and Caleb Hanson (Accounting ’11), Business Unit Finance Manager at Republic Services. They shared stories about their early careers, including how they were helped into their first professional job by other UNW alumni and multiple “God moments” throughout their careers. Students enjoyed a time of networking and making connections after they shared. 

Carlee Van Duzer (Music Education ’11) was awarded the 2020 Green-Orr Award at Westminster Schools of Augusta, Georgia. Criteria for the award include showing clear evidence and consistent support and advancement of Westminster's mission; demonstrating significant impact on students through regular contact via teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring; providing a positive Christian role model; and having completed at least five years on the faculty at Westminster.

Spring and Fall 2020 Commencement

Due to COVID-19, the spring 2020 commencement ceremonies were postponed and are currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 19, 2020. The fall 2020 commencement ceremonies are scheduled to take place on Friday, December 18, 2020. Ceremonies on both days will occur at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Knight Performance Hall (KPH). See the commencement planning page for details. Due to COVID-19, seating in KPH for all ceremonies will be limited to participating graduates and their guests (two tickets per participating graduate). All others, including faculty, staff, and other guests, may view the ceremonies virtually (see the Commencement Livestream link on the commencement planning page). New Opportunities to serve in UNWRA

Have you considered volunteering for one of the UNWRA committees? Now is the perfect time to help grow the organization. We are in the early stages of developing the following committees:
 

Committees

  • Program: Arranges for luncheon speakers and handles logistics of luncheon.
  • Membership: Recruits new members and manages membership database.
  • Nominating: Proposes slate of officer and Board candidates for the membership.
  • UNWRA Cares: Provides support to spouses and families grieving a death or coping with hospitalization or disability.
  • UNWRA History: Compiles and organizes material for an annual UNWRA contribution to the University Archives.
  • Prayer: Shares prayer requests with membership.
