The City of Dana Point unveiled the latest bronze statue within Watermen’s Plaza, celebrating the life and accomplishments of John Severson, founder of SURFER magazine and a patriarch of the modern surf media. The City is honored to recognize Severson’s positive contribution to Dana Point, and has postponed a public ribbon cutting due to the impacts of COVID-19.
This latest memorial joins statues of Bruce Brown, Hobie Alter and Phil Edwards, all located within the plaza planned to honor a number of prominent watermen and women in Dana Point’s history. Severson launched SURFER magazine in 1960 out of a small Dana Point office.
The City Council also recently commissioned its next statue in the series to feature American surfer and pioneer Joyce Hoffman which will be installed in Watermen’s Plaza in 2021. Raised in Dana Point, Hoffman dominated women’s surfing throughout the ‘60s. Among her accomplishments, she won three United States Surfing Championships in a row and took a fourth title in 1971.
The life-sized sculptures of local surf industry legends are being created by artist Bill Limebrook, who grew up on Beach Road in Dana Point.
