CHAIR SIDE CHATS with HISTORIANS
History's Local Bounty Revealed: A Freewheeling Personal Conversation
with Polk's Pre-Eminent Historians

Dr. Canter Brown, Jr and Dr. James "Mike" Denham
Florida Southern College's Center for Florida History and the Lakeland History Room at the Lakeland Public Library proudly present a live and provocative give-and-take exchange between these two historians.

With decades of historical research in their portfolio, each has earned high accolades for professional excellence in teaching and writing, including the Florida Historical Society's coveted Rembert Patrick Prize. Individually and together, they have explored sorely neglected and misunderstood corners of Florida's past.

Whether the subject has involved frontier violence, Cracker families, African American accomplishments and legacies, remarkable women, or any other point of interest along the way, Denham and Brown consistently have brought their focus to the human level, often directing specific attention to the Tampa Bay region and, particularly, Polk County.

A question-and-answer format will offer structure to their interaction, but no restrictions have been imposed on our participants as to subject matter or opinion. Join us as we pull back the curtain on our shared, surprising, and sometimes spectacular past.

To submit questions to this teleconference chair-side chat or to learn more about our authors' most-recent works and current projects please send it to LuAnn Mims via email

Spanish-American War Collection

Lakeland, Florida was selected by the War Department in 1898 as a site to quarter troops bound for Cuba via Tampa to fight in the Spanish-American War. Tampa was unable to cope with the large number of soldiers arriving and Lakeland was chosen to help relieve some of the burden on Tampa.

This small collection contains photographs depicting the activities of the Second Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers and the Seventy-first Regiment of New York Volunteers while encamped in Lakeland awaiting orders to proceed to Cuba.

Featured digital collection:  Spanish-American War Collection

Lakelanders enjoy good places to eat. Some places have come and gone and others have stayed.  Enjoy this collection of images from Lakeland's past.
