HORNTOOTING!

David Bodner of Skylight Financial Group welcomed Laura Frye to his team. Laura is a Toledo native, now living in Sylvania, with her husband of 24 years, three daughters, and a Great Dane named Ramona. She joined the team in August, as an administrative assistant and Marketing Director and she brings in depth behind the scenes experience with both New York Life and Northwestern Mutual and the third generation of financial planners in her family.

When some people get into their 50's and their children go off to college, they buy fast cars, motorcycles, boats, etc. Instead  Jeff LaCourse, Affinity Advisory Network, LLC, decided to start taking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lessons. He reports that he has already learned a lot, and is getting into much better physical condition.

Debby Papay, Bayer, Papay & Steiner Co., LPA, spearheaded an effort to recruit volunteers to sign holiday cards for the elderly/disabled veterans at the Sandusky VA Home.  They signed and wrote message on 450 individually hand-made, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah cards as a way to thank the veterans for their service.

This month I want to re-introduce you to a CN graduate from a long time ago. Patrick finished the CN class in the spring of 2005, almost as long ago as I did! I have been fortunate to count Pat as one of my friends for many years. His oldest son, Drew and my son are the same age and have gone to school and played sports together and against each other since they were little.

Pat has been a health insurance broker with Savage & Associates for 23 years. He focuses on businesses with between 10 and 300 employees. His philosophy is to treat everyone from the smallest business to the largest the same way and to give them the same service and attention. Pat will work with companies of any size, but says the 10-300 falls right into his sweet spot.

As we all know, there have been many changes in the health insurance market, especially in recent years. He says that compliance issues and technology have completely changed how he does business. With the current pandemic challenges, Pat has come up with a program which uses short videos to help employees navigate their enrollment options, which makes it much easier for them than reading brochures. It also allows Patrick to help them with their options without necessarily needing to be in the business personally, when it is not possible.

Pat is truly an expert in his field and has written articles and recently spoke to a national actuarial conference about compliance in today’s market. He says that what gives him the most enjoyment from his work is the satisfaction of helping both business owners and their employees navigate such a difficult, challenging decision. Simplifying the process and helping them understand their options is very rewarding.

Pat and his beautiful wife of 20 years, Mandy, live in Perrysburg with their 3 boys, Drew, a freshman at University of Toledo, Dillon, a Junior at Perrysburg High School, and Isaac, who is a 5th grader. Pat has been coaching baseball and basketball for many years, and has been involved with and was the head of the Perrysburg Junior Jackets basketball program for about 10 years. In his “free” time, he enjoys BBQ and watching the boys’ sports.

How to Collaborate
By: Chris Kapelski, chris@idstoledo.com
Collaboration is a key component of being successful in business, life, and networking. If you’re going to be successful, at some point, you’re going to have to collaborate with someone. In my business life, I’ve been a part of countless successful and failed collaborations. These experiences taught me a ton about the right and wrong way to collaborate. For example, have you tried to meet with someone that only talks about themselves? YIKES!

Ultimately, I learned from my experiences and created 4 simple steps to help you collaborate successfully. I hope you enjoy!

You Think You Know Everything?
Debby Peters, Debby@connextnation.com

After you have met with someone several times, it may seem like you know just about everything about this person.  I beg to differ and have a story to demonstrate why I have this belief.

Recently I had lunch with friend, Maggie Sullivan.  Maggie is how I want to be “when I grow up.”  She is 87 years YOUNG and I mean young!  We have known each ever since she moved here from the east coast in the early ‘90s.  For the longest time she had a very successful costume jewelry business.  I was in mourning for awhile when she “retired” from that.  She is an artist who is always learning new ways to express herself.

At lunch we talked about issues of a more personal nature and that is when I had my “aha” moment.  We were chatting about when Maggie separated from her husband and I wondered how she made it financially.

This happened in the early days of the women’s movement, when women were not easily able to stand alone.  Maggie shared that she had owned a trademark and patent company.  In my mind the work would have been so different from the artistic Maggie that I know, but it doesn’t surprise me because I think she could do anything she wants to do.

With this being said, I challenge you to have lunch (and allot just a bit of extra time) to really find out what you have missed about your friends.  I know that I get into the business mode and forget that there is a whole other side of every person.  Listening, really listening, is the best gift you can give to someone!
