Fire + Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is currently recruiting for Retained Firefighters in Walgett. The Walgett Brigade responded to 50 incidents in 2019/2020. This included fires, hazard materials incidents and rescues.

Firefighters undertake a wide range of duties including: fire suppression (buildings and bushfires), rescue, hazardous material response, community education and fire prevention activities.

To ensure the brigade is able to continue to provide this service to the community, we are currently looking for more firefighters. I am asking employers in Walgett to encourage their employees to become part of FRNSW.

There are benefits to the community at large as well as human resources benefits for employers. FRNSW provides firefighters with extensive training including first aid, working at heights, heavy vehicles, confined space, breathing apparatus use, atmospheric monitoring, manual handling and rescue operations. It also provides an essential emergency service to the people and businesses of Walgett.

Walgett Brigade Captain, Zac Whiteman, is keen to hear from interested people living in the community who would be willing to be trained as a retained firefighter. FRNSW welcomes applications from men and women, indigenous people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Shift workers, full time or part time workers, mums with children at school are all encouraged to apply for this on call, part time employment opportunity.

To be eligible to apply for a Retained Firefighter position the applicant should: be available to attend fire calls and other incidents to suit the station needs; live within a reasonable distance from Walgett Fire Station; have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team; meet FRNSW’s medical and physical requirements and be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident.

Included with this letter are some information sheets that you can pass on to your staff. For further information please call myself or Karen Burow at the Dubbo Zone Office on (02) 5853 2300 or, alternatively, visit Walgett Fire Station at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Walgett Swimming Pool: CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Unfortunately the walgett swimming pool is not ready to re-open, once we have a confirmed date to do so, we will ensure to let people know. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause please see other Shire Swimming Pool opening dates and times.
Public lighting plays an important role in providing safe, secure and attractive public areas for both pedestrians and vehicles, over the past few months Essential Energy has spent over $100,000 upgrading all existing street lighting in the Walgett Shire to a more energy efficient LED Lighting in a bid to minimise costs and carbon emissions.

In addition to this major upgrade Essential Energy in partnership with Walgett Shire Council  are seeking community input from individuals and business houses to identify dimly lit streets in their neighborhood.

Residents are encouraged to submit proposed streetlight locations by 5pm Friday 30th October 2020.
