Newsletter Nov 2020

Good morning,

Welcome to November!  Not sure if its me or my imagination, but I feel like I'm missing fall colors this year...maybe we're in for a November treat!  Anyway, I thought I'd bring you a few in case you feel the same.

The latest and greatest comes from a family portrait session at the One Room Schoolhouse!  I just love this location with all its colors and space!  Perfect for kids, dogs and anything else you can throw in!

The spotlight this month outlines the little things at weddings that pack a punch and really shouldn't go unnoticed or undocumented!!

If you were undecided about the family holiday mini sessions...it's still not too late...there are still a few slots to grab.  See the details below and click on the picture to schedule your family session in November.

For the photographer in you helps with figuring out just how many megapixels your image needs to be to print it a certain size.  Print companies do a great job ensuring that you don't try to print something with a resolution to low for the size of the print.  But it's good to know how to work it out yourself as well!

My own camera fun brings English fall colors to you from my trip last November!  Enjoy the visual delights!

Finally, the panoramic brings a stormy beach scene and the quote....well you'll just have to scroll to the bottom to get that!  There were so many I could have chosen from the book I am reading... 'The Way of the Seal' by Mark Divine.  A great book to help you develop a Ninja style approach to your goals!

Have a great November and a very happy Thanksgiving!

Cheers,

~ Tracey xxx

Latest and Greatest - Sunny Family Photography

What do two adorable kids, one lively puppy and two devoted caring parents have in common?  I’ll give you a clue, it starts with f and ends in y!

One of my main goals in photographing families is to create and capture moments during the session which reflect the love, humor and fun that families enjoy in their own time.  In the space of a session, and the limited time that’s available, it can be hard to capture those moments.  Preparation and visualization can help as well as trying to have fun, treats as well as combining getting dressed up with going out for dinner can also spice up the afternoon. The family below were outstanding, not only did they arrive relaxed and smiley!  They brought they’re bouncy dog, as well as guitars...so fun.

Needless to say pets and children nearly always steal the show in one way or another.  They all had tremendous fun in this session!

Thank you for choosing me to capture these moments for your family!

Spotlight - It's the Little Things!

They say it’s the little things in life that matter most.  Show me a wedding where the bride and groom and family have not paid special attention to the little things, to the favors and the detail.  To the colors and the style and the historical importance of each little piece of jewelry.

When so much thought and planning has gone into the detail, it should not be forgotten.  In photographing weddings we endeavor to capture all of those tiny little details so that you can relive them overtime.  Flowers will wilt, candles will burn, cakes will be eaten and wine will be drunk but these little details will live on for us all to remember in pictures.

Below are a few of the special details that were used in in a recent boutique wedding we photographed.  I just love how they all seem to blend together in the same rustic style...so pretty!  Make sure you give lots of thought to these little things when planning your event, it is the finishing touch to a wonderful day.

For the Photographer in You -
What Resolution Do I Need to Print Photos?

I often get asked this question and to answer it, we need to delve a little deeper into the terms used to describe digital images.  Here are a few of the main ones -

dpi - dots per inch. This is how the resolution is measured when you print your image at home.  It is also used to gauge the detail needed in order for the picture to be clear.  True to the name, your printer prints ‘dots’ to form the image.

Pixel - the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen (Wikipedia)

ppi - pixels per inch - the number of pixels in a square inch

Megapixel: one million pixels. This is how the resolution of digital cameras is measured. The larger the megapixel rating, the more information you can capture within an image and the larger you can print the high quality image.

I have deliberately left out a whole host of other terms that we really aren’t interested in for this purpose!

For photos to look good on a screen, the resolution of the photos must be no less than 72 pixels per inch or ‘ppi’.  These images are easy to share, download and you can store a huge number on a modest memory card.

Just try to print a photo on paper from the internet and you will quickly discover that 72 ppi is not enough to create a quality print.  For that, we need to have 300ppi.

Higher resolution cameras not only allow us to print larger quality images but also make it possible to crop large areas of an image and still retain a large enough image file to print a high quality picture.

Now to the question...stay with me here...this is where we need a bit of thought.

Let’s say I want to print a 16x24 print - what resolution do I need in order to achieve a quality print.  On the short edge, we need 16 inches and we already know that we need 300 pixels per inch.

So 16x300=4800 pixels. On the long side it’s 24x300=7200.

For the whole image in total it’s 4,800x7,200 = 30,240,000 or about 30 megapixels.

Another example I hear you say :-)

A 5 x 7 print would need 5 x 300 x 7 x 300 = 3,150,000 pixels or approximately 3 megapixels

Below is a chart that outlines inches on the x and y axis and how many megapixels are needs to print the size with 300ppi. Click on the chart for more information.

Hope this helps a bit...as always, do get in touch if you have any questions or would like to know more.

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Dorset Fall Color

In case you are in need of some fall colors, I thought I would share some of the best I have seen in the last few years. A few of the pictures are from my trip to Dorset UK last year.  In case you’re not familiar with this county in England, I have included Wikipedia‘s image of the county.

As you can see the colors were absolutely out of this world.

Panoramic Passion - Stormy Skies

There is something about the colors that we see with stormy skies.  This picture was from the Sunday of storms across the Bay Area!  The yellow rain jacket just pops out of the picture and if you look closely enough, you can see what the little boy is looking at on the horizon!

Quote of the Month

I'm reading 'The Way of the Seal' by Mark Divine at the moment  and it's a fantastic read for anyone!  It teaches you how to approach your goals with unswerving focus and ninja warrior energy and strength. Of course...still working on the practical application :-)
