LIS education still going strong in Australia

In light of Friday’s news that RMIT plans to close its Master of Information Management course, ALIA and educators of library and information science (LIS) have co-signed a joint communique stating their ongoing commitment to deliver accredited LIS courses at their universities. Have your say in the national early language and literacy strategy

National Early Language and Literacy Strategy Coalition | 4 November 2020

The National Early Language and Literacy Strategy Coalition (NELLC), of which ALIA is a founder member has released a discussion paper which outlines the objectives and priorities of a national early language and literacy strategy. ALIA is encouraging public libraries across Australia to provide their feedback to advocacy@alia.org.au

Celebrate Australia Reads with us this week and encourage your patrons to read for an hour during the Australian Reading Hour on 12 November 2020. Australian Library Design Awards

ALIA | 30 November 2020

The deadline for the ALIA-run Australian Library Design Awards has been extended until 30 November 2020, recognising the difficulties would-be entrants are experiencing through COVID-19. Recently built, renovated, or refurbished libraries (between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2020) are eligible for entry. The awards are presented in partnership with Architecture AU, the State Library of Queensland, and Raeco. You can also read Raeco's article on the future of library design

Digital Health Literacy program 

ALIA | 31 March 2021

The timeframe for the Digital Health Literacy online free training has been extended until 31 March 2021. This nationwide initiative provides training to library staff on how users can navigate and understand the new Federal Government digital health initiatives, such as My Health Record and assists libraries to better support their communities, and engage with other likeminded organisations. The November/December 2020 issue of INCITE, with the theme of Calling for Change, is freely available as a digital-only issue, which can be downloaded from ALIA Library. On 5 November at 1:00pm AEDT we will be hosting an online session ‘INCITE in conversation’, featuring Maeva Masterson and Aimee Hay from Libraries & Archives Northern Territory (LANT), who authored the article ‘Reflecting who we are’, on page 14 of the current issue of INCITE. Living in the World of Fake News

ALIA's latest submission to Government 

ALIA has submitted a further response to the Government inquiry into issues facing diaspora communities in Australia. Previously, ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher, alongside Dr John Vallance State Librarian and CEO, State Library of New South Wales, represented National and State Libraries Australia (NSLA) and ALIA at the Senate Inquiry.

School library and children's literacy news 

The latest monthly writing activity from Ursula Dubosarsky Australian Children's Laureate has been released, with the theme November Nods. Have you read the best new children's books according to The Guardian? A recent report, Educational Opportunity in Australia 2020, has revealed that one quarter of Australian children aged 11-12 have inadequate literacy and numeracy skills. 

Public library news 

In NSW, the Fairfield community is looking to introduce the Libraries After Dark program first started in Victoria; Glen Innes Library is celebrating 66 years of operation; and in-person storytimes are starting up again at Grenfell Library. In Victoria, Goulburn Valley Libraries is reopening, the Wodonga Gallery-Library is calling for expressions of interest to host exhibitions and events; and in Queensland, Logan City Council Libraries has been very popular during the pandemic. In related news, a recent ABCLife article, 'How to keep doing the things you love on a budget', recommends visiting your local library; and the Public Lending Right Committee has released its Annual Report 2019-2020

National and State Library news 

The State Library of NSW's 2021 Fellowships have been announced, the library was featured in The Guardian article 'From daguerreotypes to glass plates: Australia's oldest images – photo essay'; and the library's exhibition Eight Days in Kamay won the 2020 Museums and Galleries National Award for the best temporary or travelling exhibition. Catch up on the State Library of QLD's podcast, Dangerous Women; and the State Library Victoria's webinar The Future of citizenship. In other news, the National Library of Australia has become aware that some of its staff have been underpaid and is in the process of rectifying the error

Technology and media literacy news 

Media Literacy Week may be over for this year, but libraries can still access ABC Education's free resources. Additionally, a recent survey undertaken by The Conversation has revealed that the participants surveyed have a low level of trust in artificial intelligence, and want it to be better regulated; and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has released its 2019-2020 Annual Report

Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship

Applications are open for the Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship. The fellowship assists the education and training of health science librarians from countries outside the United States and Canada. The deadline for applications is 1 December 2020. 

Arts and media news 

The Impossible Project is an ongoing record of arts events which were cancelled as a result of COVID-19. This year the AIATSIS Indigenous Art Market will be held online. In book awards news, the shortlists for the 2021 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award; the inaugural ARA Historical Novel Prize, the Diagram Prize 2020, and the British Fantasy Awards 2020; the winners of the 2020 Queensland Literary Awards; the Victorian Premier’s History Award; the Ngaio Marsh Award 2020; the 2020 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction, the inaugural SBS Emerging Writers' competition and the International Dublin Literary Award were all announced. 

 INTERNATIONAL

IFLA news 

ALIA has signed IFLA's Library Pledge for Digital Inclusion which calls for libraries, associations and individuals to reduce the digital divide. Submit your agenda items to the IFLA Extraordinary General Assembly which will be held on 12 February 2021. The deadline for submissions is 10 November 2020. Read the latest 10-Minute International Librarian, this one is on thinking on who else can advocate for your library; two libraries were recognised in the New York City Public Design Commission's Awards for Excellence in Design. 

International news 

In New Zealand, the recent weeding of more than 600,000 books has had its detractors. However, an article published by stuff.co argues that the move makes room for collection items which better represent the nation. Also from New Zealand, read how Wellington City Council saved more than $19 million when rebuilding its Central Library; and LIANZA's 2019-2020 Annual Report is now live. In the UK, there are calls from Black-owned bookshops for more representation of Black authors; The Conversation has also published an article on the same issue; and Richard Ovenden from the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford was interviewed by ABC Radio National about the history of destroying and saving collection items. In other news, residents of Sheffield are campaigning for their local library to be restored to its former glory. In the US, the American Library Association (ALA) has announced the recipients of its Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change Grants

Jan Richards is relocating to Tasmania 

Jan Richards AM FALIA (CP) (pictured right), former ALIA President and manager of Central West Libraries is retiring. Jan has spent nearly 50 years working across libraries in NSW, and was conferred an ALIA Fellowship in 2013 and the prestigious HCL Anderson Award in 2019 in recognition of her exemplary work. She was interviewed by ABC Radio Central West NSW about her career.

International Games Week 2020 is coming up soon! This year the week runs from 8-14 November, and ALIA is encouraging its Members to register for the week. This week is a great opportunity for libraries to introduce fun activities and raise awareness of the social and educational benefits of play. Libraries can celebrate the week by hosting either in-person (where it is safe to do so) or virtual events.

Language and Literacy: The power of reading

In partnership with ALIA, Speech Pathology Australia has developed a professional development program free for ALIA Members. Developed by speech pathologists Dr Michelle Brown and Yvette Dempsey, you will be empowered with effective strategies for promoting children’s language and literacy development while reading books. Titled Language and Literacy: The power of reading, the program, part of Speech Pathology Australia’s Book of the Year Speechie Library Talks campaign, is a self-paced video-based program culminating with a Q&A session facilitated by Dr Michelle Brown.
