We are pleased to let you know that applications for the NCSS Summer School are now open!

The National Computer Science School (NCSS) brings together talented students for an intensive week of computer programming, web development, and robotics.  Designed for computing, science and mathematics students, the NCSS is about challenging participants to think like computer scientists. Students also have the opportunity to engage with academics, industry professionals and other like-minded young people in a stimulating and social environment.

Due to COVID-19 we have made the following changes to our programme to allow us to run a safe summer school:

  • NCSS will run for 8 days only from Sunday 3rd January - Sunday 10th January 2021 (inclusive)
  • We will be running one node only, at the University of Sydney
  • We are only able to accept applications from students who live within a 3 hour drive from Sydney

NCSS will still be residential, with all participants staying on campus at the Women’s College at the University of Sydney, and there will be strict COVID-19 protocols that all attendees will have to adhere to.

Whilst we have every intention to run the summer school, we reserve the right to cancel at any time, based on advice from NSW Health or due to other consequences of the current pandemic situation.

We do regret that due to the pandemic these restrictions are necessary and understand that this may be disappointing to you.  If you would like to hear more about other opportunities to learn or expand your coding skills over the next year, please let us know.

Applying - teachers

Teachers are very welcome to attend NCSS, please note the same COVID-19 restrictions apply to teachers.

Teachers participate in the NCSS as team members working directly with the students. No programming experience is required. Teachers will receive comprehensive course and tutorial notes that can be reused in the classroom and will have access to leading academic staff and professionals.

To apply, please complete and submit this form:  cmp.ac/ncss-teacher-2021.  The deadline to submit is 5pm, Friday 13th November 2020.

Applying -  students

Applications are completed online – please visit http://ncss.edu.au/summer-school/applications/.  The deadline to apply is also 5pm, Friday 13th November.

Applicants need to submit an online form including a personal statement on what they hope to get out of the summer school, and upload their last two school reports, a letter of support from a teacher, and if they have programming experience, they can include examples of code they have written.

Selection of students is based on academic performance, particularly in the subjects of mathematics and science, and demonstrated interest in computing. Personal qualities, such as community service, and social and teamwork skills will also be taken into consideration.

No prior knowledge of computing is assumed. Students who are not taking computing units of study at school are eligible to apply. Rest assured that students who enter the program as proficient programmers will also find plenty of material to extend their skills

Cost

The school is residential, with all students staying on campus with staff in full-board accommodation provided by The Women's College at the University of Sydney. The generous support of our sponsors has enabled us to heavily subsidise the program. The cost to students is $500 each including GST.  Please note travel to the summer school is not included.   This fee may be waived in cases of financial hardship.

Please forward this email to other teachers who may have interested students in their classes, and ensure that all applications are in by 13 November, 5pm.
