We Need a Biden Economy

Read the full Issue Brief here

President Trump’s campaign speeches tout how he built “the greatest economy that we've had in our history.” Studies show, however, that the Trump economy and its initial result is a product of Obama’s economic planning and health. Trump promised an economic growth rate of over 4% annually– what he achieved, in fact, is a brief continuation of the inherited strong economic policies of the Obama-Biden administration. Moreover, under Vice President Biden’s watch during his tenure, there were more jobs added monthly than there were in Trump’s first three years.

Trump, on the other hand, is the first president in American history to have lost jobs over his administration. Alongside letting COVID-19 jeopardize American wellbeing, his administration oversaw 37.6 million workers filing for unemployment and more than 100,000 small businesses closing down. Slashing critical safety nets and withholding protections for small businesses has and will continue to devastate the U.S economy should we have four more years of Trump.

Needless to say, we need change and we need it now. Moody’s finds that 18.6 million jobs would be created over Biden’s tenure and the economy would grow by an average annual rate of 2.9%. If Trump wins, this picture looks markedly worse, with a 10-year economic growth average of 2.4%. This is no surprise. Biden’s economic policies are comprehensive and designed to yield results for the American people. Biden promises to provide small businesses and entrepreneurs with comprehensive support and comeback packages for COVID relief. The Biden administration will revise tax schemes to encourage small businesses owners and keep large corporations accountable.Biden’s investments in modern infrastructure and clean energy will increase the long-term viability of American industry while creating millions of jobs. We need a Biden administration these next years– please help us get there.

India tries to shake off pro-Trump image in run-up to US election

"With Joe Biden pulling ahead of Donald Trump in the polls, the BJP was worried its American wing had a pro-Trump image problem. “The effort in Delhi has always been to remain bipartisan and stay out of polarised US politics,” said Shivshankar Menon, a former Indian foreign secretary, national security adviser and diplomat. “But this has got more difficult in the last few years.”

Certainly, Trump’s public displays of camaraderie with the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, have been a defining feature of US-India relations over the last four years. At the “Howdy Modi” rally, in Texas in September 2019, Trump hailed Modi as one of “America’s greatest, most devoted and most loyal friends”, while the two leaders tightly grasped each other’s hands. A similarly gushing rally was held for Trump when he visited India in March 2020.

However, as the election has approached, the emphasis in New Delhi has been on bipartisanship. Since 2000 – through Democrat and Republican presidents in the US, and BJP and Congress governments in India – the alliance has largely strengthened. Whether the occupier of the Oval Office in January is Biden or Trump, India is determined to keep it that way."

US election 2020: Indian and Pakistani diaspora rally together

"Indians and Pakistanis are often seen as being at loggerheads because of strained relations between their respective countries. But in the US, the two communities are part of the same South Asian diaspora and often work together during political campaigns.

"He [Mr Syed] has access to different networks that I didn't," said Mr Narasimhan, explaining that he wanted to work with Mr Syed precisely because he hailed from a different community and lives in another part of the US.

Their group endorsed Democratic candidate Joe Biden for presidency in January. The two men believe that Mr Biden's victory will lead to a "more equal, just" America."

Is Twitter Going Full Resistance? Here’s the Woman Driving the Change.

"Gadde pitched Dorsey on a radical idea for a fix: Maybe Twitter should just, well, stop selling political ads.

It was a bold idea—no other major American platform had simply banned political ads—and Dorsey wasn’t immediately sold. For one thing, the company had built itself around a commitment to hosting a free-flowing public conversation. Gadde—officially Twitter’s head of legal, policy and trust—pressed her case, and she had allies on the idea inside the building, including the head of Twitter’s trust and safety team. Within days Dorsey signed off on the idea, announcing a global ban on political ads on October 30, 2019, in an 11-tweet thread detailing the company’s reasoning."

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Nidhi Kansal, Database Management Volunteer for Indians for Biden

Nidhi was born and raised in the Midwest. She is a Primary Care Physician/Obesity Consultant practicing at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, IL.  She spends most of her time in an outpatient clinic but also rotates on an academic service in the hospital.
Although she has no official political background/experience, the crossroads between politics and healthcare are evident now more than ever during this pandemic and she wanted to help the cause in any way possible. Social equality in healthcare continues to be a contentious issue politically and as a primary care physician Nidhi sees the negative outcomes of this current inequality and finds it to be the most challenging part of her career.

Why are you supporting the Biden-Harris ticket?
It is important to me that my vote supports a ticket that in turn shares my beliefs: focusing on climate change instead of denying it, continuing to work on an affordable health care plan, and a ticket that supports all Americans regardless of race, religion, sexual identity/preference.

Why do you think Indian Americans should support Biden?
Biden has ALL Americans' interest at heart, not just wealthy white people like the current president. There has been an increase of hate crimes against South Asians and limitations in immigration/green cards during the current administration. I know this will change under Biden. He has always had a good rapport with Indians and his administration will only benefit our community and allow it to expand with success and with opportunities for a continued better future. As a physician, I also need a president who will continue to support and focus on affordable healthcare and focus on science and listen to his staff members that know more than him to allow us to move in the right direction during a pandemic but also for our general healthcare.

Why are you supporting the Indians for Biden National Council?
I know this election is one that will go down in history. I wanted to be part of the volunteer efforts and decided to get involved in a formal manner.  Indians for Biden has done an excellent job at organizing, disseminating information, and continuing to rally and encourage Indians to vote for Biden. Proud to be involved!
