We’ve been very busy with our revolving door of eagles.
Eagles in, eagles out, eagles moving through the recovery spaces.
Generally, this is how the eagles move through their time at the centre…
- Intake exam then into an eagle box in the nursery where they can be weighed and given any medications or wound management etc and be closely monitored.
- Move into a larger individual enclosure outside – can still monitor behaviour and feedings etc while allowing them more freedom to move and feel the fresh air and elements.
- Move into the big eagle flyway where they can stretch their wings and fly. They can use high and low perches, socialise with other eagles, bathe in the pools, build up muscle mass and flight strength.
- Then the final catch and…release!
Tips and Rosie are two of the bald eagles who returned to the wilderness this month! They were released in their home territory on Oct 4. 2020.

We have a wonderful ongoing relationship with the Atlantic Veterinary College on PEI and would like to share a success story of this partnership. Please enjoy the beautiful photography and words of PEI photographer Brian Mcinnes from a recent collaborative eagle rehab and release.

‘Spud’, the bald eagle that was found injured on the side of the road in Augustine Cove earlier this year, was released back where he was found after care and recovery at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown and the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Nova Scotia.
The bird was released Saturday October 24, 2020 by Brenda Boates, operations manager of the centre, AVC wildlife technician Fiep de Bie and Jessica Rock, a volunteer veterinarian at the CWRC.
De Bie said that when the eagle came to the college he was ‘extremely thin and his feathering wasn’t great either so he may have been on the ground for a while, but the main thing was that he was really emaciated.”

Since it was still unknown what happened to the bird and the technicians and veterinarians were unsure of its flying capabilities, it was decided to send it to the CWRC in Nova Scotia where it could be assessed and build up its strength.
“We took the bird into the CWRC to allow him to build up his flight muscles and get conditioned by flying in the raptor flyway,” said Brenda Boates, operations manager at the CWRC.
