The Prevalence of Tobacco Products Among Rural Middle School Students: 2019 South Dakota Youth Tobacco Survey

In the United States (U.S.), tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death, disease and disabilities, costing $170 billion in adults medical expenses per year. In South Dakota (SD), the estimated health costs due to smoking is $373 million dollars per year. Efforts to monitor tobacco use among youth and prevent youth from tobacco use initiation and consumption are imperative to reduce the public health burden that tobacco dependency entails.

Monitoring the prevalence of tobacco use among youth is crucial to assist health professionals and state agencies to implement evidence-based interventions to decrease the prevalence of tobacco use and improve future health outcomes for a large population of youth in SD. Moreover, data from the SD Youth Tobacco Survey (SD YTS) serves to enhance the capacity of state agencies and organizations to design, implement, and evaluate tobacco prevention and control programs.

This article aims to examine differences in prevalence of tobacco use among youth in South Dakota using the 2019 and 2017 SD YTS findings, and compare with the national rates using the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data.
